There is a saying among some farmers in the Carolina Sandhills: “A man would have to be a fool to cut down a longleaf pine.”
It’s not because the gangly-limbed tree is particularly beautiful. The pine doesn’t have a magnolia’s flowers or an oak’s shade.
He could get $4,000 an acre for clear-cutting his mature longleaf pines for timber. Or, he said, he could earn $1,200 an acre collecting pine needles from the same trees — every year.

why does this forum so often have such bias against the rich? The one just a few days ago about the guy in Missouri who cut down some shitty pine trees (it’s a pine tree trigger) that were on a national trail blocking his view had posters wishing he’d lose his home and be fined a million Austin Powers dollars...for the weed of trees ...not like some Methuselah live oak or sequoyah were lost......freeper scold trigger pull is always just a an ounce or so...
It explains the pines in NJ, too. Kicking myself now. My property was filled with pines. I cursed about those pine needles every time we raked. And now I read that I could've sold that stuff?
IT’s used in SC extensively but I prefer shredded pine bark mulch because it looks much better for a far longer period of time.
“And now I read that I could’ve sold that stuff?”
Your pine needles are not the same as the ones down South. The used in landscaping there are probably 3 times longer than what you are used to.
“Watch out for ticks, as they love pine needle straw nests.”
Also loved by little red ants that bite like bug red ants as well as spiders.
“...pine straw bales at Home Depot.”
That’s definitely a regional product. Never heard of it!
“The pine cones are a large and plentiful problem.”
Ron thru a chipper and they make great mulch.
Ah, I see what you mean. Yes, those needles are much longer.
Excellent video about the longleaf pine.

Pine cones are great for starting your fire. Gather those that have a lot of pine sap on them. Give the other cones to a senior citizens center. Some hobbyists like to make pine cone wreaths.
Coffee grounds as well
That area is stunningly beautiful. Been there many times.
High acid soil.
Some there claim to live in LA. (Lower Alabama)
Anyway...
True dat.
I hate pine trees! If they have had pine borers get under the bark, they make the sap run and eventually the tree dies. I told some people if I ever have my own place, I would get rid of the pine trees!
Crafters buy pine cones...
