A missing 69-year-old fisherman was found alive on Sunday after surviving 17 nights in the Oregon wilderness alone, authorities said.

Harry Burleigh survived in the wilderness for over two weeks after going missing. Harry Burleigh survived in the wilderness for over two weeks after going missing. Facebook Search and rescue crews had been looking for Roseburg resident Harry Burleigh since he went missing May 7 after a camping trip in the Twin Lakes area.

On Sunday afternoon, a team found him after calling his name near where they’d found a shelter he’d built for himself days earlier, an announcement from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said. “He was found to be walking and complaining of minor pain, but was in stable condition,” the statement said.

HUH? Facebook has a SAR function?

Did he try and wave off the helicopter? “Hey! You’re scaring the fish!”

Well at least he had clothes. But there weren’t any cameras or producers around to call in the medics if a snake bite him in the ass. Maybe it was one of those situations we occasionally find ourselves in.

Forget the book, the movie should star Nick Nolte as an irascible old cus, lost in the woods with nothing but a mountaineering backpack full of Jack Daniels.

We live on a 160 acre farm in deep East Texas that is heavily wooded in most spots. One of the many reasons I quit leasing to hunters on our place was that every now and then, some of the “city folks” would actually get lost on it, or not be able to walk through it as far as they thought they could.

That's pretty impressive lasting 17 days in the woods. But check out The North Pond Hermit

My brother-in-law and I had a 40 acre lease of private land. It was right in the middle of a public hunting area in SE Oklahoma. He brought a DEA agent friend there one weekend.

We were out hunting one evening, and someone started shooting. This was several shots, more like they were signaling.

I ran across my brothers-in-law, and we continued to the gun fire. As we got closer, there was someone yelling help.

We found the DEA fella standing there yelling, and shooting. He said he had gotten lost.

Hell. The 40 acres was fenced. All he had to do was walk the perimeter till he came across the road in.

When I was about 18, some friends and I went to a large plot of land that belonged to some men at our church. It was about two square miles as I recall.

Idiots that we were, we decided a game of capture the flag was a good idea. At night.

The land had roads on three sides and a fence line on the fourth.

My team consisted of three of us. I went on my own and the other two were together. I’m pretty good directionally and had no problems. The other two never came back to camp. We commenced a search. At one point, I decided to drive the perimeter and found them walking the road in the wrong direction. They apparently went through a break in the fence and realized they were lost when they ran into a building.

They would have been wise to hang there till morning, but these weren’t the sharpest tools in the shed.

Sounds like the old fisherman had a great adventure and was relatively thriving in the woods.

Probably found by the local Tax Assessor or Code Enforcement Officer.

“HUH? Facebook has a SAR function?”

Yes but since he was a white male it took 17 days. Lowest priority. Those getting lost coming home from BLM rallies are given highest priority
