Australia will need to remain closed for decades if it wants to stay 100% COVID-19 free, according to the Australian Medical Association

* If Australia continues with its current approach to pandemic containment it could be decades before international borders reopen, the Australian Medical Association has warned.

* While the AMA suggests many Australians don’t think border closures past 2022 are “reasonable”, in fact evidence on the ground suggests the majority of Australians are content to sacrifice freedom for safety.

* The statement comes as the Scott Morrison government is forced to defend its border plans amid pushback from industry groups.

The nation’s peak body for doctors has warned that Australia’s current strategy of COVID-19 elimination would keep the country’s international borders closed for decades.

The Australian Medical Association said if the current strategy to “stay free” of COVID-19 continues, it will be far longer than a year until Australia reopens its borders.

The statement comes as the government faces increasing pressure from affected industries to rethink its plan for a gradual reopening from mid-2022.

Australia plans to reopen borders to the rest of the world from the middle of 2022, according to the Federal Budget unveiled last week, along with a plan to fully vaccinate the population by the end of the year.

AMA president Omar Khorshid, weighing in on Australia’s pathway back to “relatively normal lives,” told a News Corp publication that “for Australia to stay free of COVID, we have to keep our borders shut for decades.”

Khorshid questioned the government’s long-term strategy and suggested many Australians would push back against border closures extending past 2022.

“I don’t think any Australian thinks that’s a reasonable thing to do, particularly when we do have a pathway out of this through vaccination,” he said.

However a growing body of evidence suggests the majority of Australians are more than happy to sacrifice travel to ensure Australia remains free of the pandemic.

A Newspoll survey published by The Australian found that a massive 73% of Australians are in favour of keeping the international border closed until at least mid-2022, even if vaccinations are offered to the entire eligible population.

And the re-election in March of Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan was widely reported to have been in part due to support in the state for his strict state border closures and hardline approach to arrivals.

Khorshid echoed statements from many industry groups claiming that the country cannot be free of COVID-19 forever and that vaccinations were the best path towards reopening while also protecting the population.

And only 240 confirmed cases of flu.

I guess restricting travel from china is good.

Note that china has recently militarily threatened Australia for some reason ?

Strange

That isn’t to keep COVID out - it’s to keep Muslims and Chinese out. :)

And Indians. Just like in Singapore, the UAE, the US, the UK and Canada, Indians have begun to dominate most IT positions in Australia. And Australians are pissed. (It’s first IT, then finance, then medical then most white-collar work, with lower castes going into construction.

China focused hard on Australia with their social media disinformation campaign. And very succesfully. Established fact.

Same here.
