Part Of What Is Wrong With This Country

What is wrong with this country? Here is one thing that I thing permeates through out a certain culture.

I went to Hibdons Tires this morning to get a flat fixed on my pickup. It is an almost new tire and I managed to pickup a nail. I was in line behind one pickup getting two new tires on the front. They pulled that pickup in just as I sat down in the waiting room, and I watched some big, fat, white millenial, turquoise colored hair guy screw around with that truck for a solid hour before they could even begin on mine.

I timed the actual machine time involved on my watch. From when the wheel and tire hits the changer to when a new tire is on the wheel and it is aired up. 3 minutes to remove a tire from the rim, spin the new one on and air it up. And that is with the guy moving slow. One minute on the balance machine. That adds up to 8 minutes of machine time. The other 52 minutes were the guy moping around, dragging air hose around, finding two new tires, rolling them from place to place, staring outside at who who knows what, and drinking water. Did I mention walking slow and moping around. You would have to set stakes in the ground to see this guy move.

Now I get it, he is doing it for minimum wage. Can we think of a single reason to pay this moron $15 per hour? I'm to the point I would rather Biden send him some groceries every month and give him an internet connection and let him sit on his butt all day at home and stay the heck out of society. Not really.

But in all seriousness.... who in their right mind would pay this guy $15 per hour to do anything?

The bleeding heart liberals in this country rant on and on about inequity. Inequality. How unfair our society is. While I realize God loves this big fat tire changer, it is not my fault if he lives in poverty.

Okay... sorry for the rant. But it is what it is.

You're lucky you didn't get a female 'mechanic'.

Not only do some of them seem to have no idea what they are doing, they demand kid glove treatment from you while giving you, the customer, no respect.

Sounds like the Black females I encounter at the VA. They try to interfere and slow things down when it begins to run smoothly.

Yep... I plug tires on all of my ranch equipment (tractors etc). You kinda hate to plug a new tire on a pickup that goes on the highway... but I will next time.

Just think of all the gasoline you saved by not driving for that hour

There’s a tiny used tire business on a corner in a bad neighborhood on my way into Tallahassee. I always get stuck at the light and I watch this ropy 120 pound white, blond guy hustle like he’s on fire. Not once that I’ve been past there has he not been moving like he’s on fire. I’d love to have that guy working for me.

I asked the owner of a gym, how the heck do you manage to hire guys who look like Hercules. He said, “Easy. Of the ones who apply, you only hire the ones who look like Hercules.” That was two miles from Florida States so I’d imagine the number of guys like that is pretty high. I got turned away from two McDonald’s today. Their doors were locked as they had no one to work the counter. Both had only one drive through open. (Couldn’t make the turn with my trailer.)

The labor market has reached what economists call, over employment. (Meaning the labor market has become inefficient. Five percent unemployed is desired as that means the market is working at maximum efficiency.) That means people are getting jobs because the labor shortage is so critical. Most of them couldn’t get a job under ordinary circumstances.

FIRST. When or why is it a “rant” to identify things that are wrong, describe them and expect or want something done aobut it? Are we never supposed to complain or even mention things that are wrong? I’m tired of this being belittled by calling it a “rant” which is the equivalent of calling any perceived offense “racist”.

SECOND, To to Discount Tire. Their shop workers are incentivized somehow to move and get the job done for the most part. Appointments are kept pretty much on time and they move vehicles through at the store I go to in Fort Smith. The manager there always manages to see just about every customer before they leave and tell them he appreciates their business.

In my world, never going to happen, malingerers would be removed from the gene pool.

How do we reverse the way things are? Remove the stimulus, the subsidy but nobody campaigning on such a platform could ever be elected.

My peeve, among many, is failure to enforce laws we already have. I can’t even get the cops to stop the speeders on the highway in front of the house or ODOT to put up some more speed limit signs. I even offered to buy a radar and camera sign trailer for them if they would use it.

A few years ago, I bought a plug kit. Within about three weeks I used all the plugs on a spate of flat tires. It was rather bizarre.

These days, he was the only person who applied for the job, passed the drug test, and actually said “yes.”

I’m not finished.

THIRD. What are the alternatives to hiring this worthless sack of crap? Have you tried to find help? I have and am not being very successful. The answer is not more money for workers any more than it is for screwls or giverment programs. More money gets the same results at greater cost and insult.

There’s nothing wrong with plugs...I’ve used them my whole life and carry a plug kit all the time.

I guess it all depends on where you take your car. I’ve got no complaints.

The ‘worker’ was apparently satisfied, his boss was satisfied and you got what you requested.

Capitalism, is it grand?

And as for the $15/hour, his boss has to manage the shop finances, and you have to pay the tab for the work done for you. You have other choices, hopefully.

On a larger basis, as wages rise by market forces or government fiat, or both, jobs are disappearing. This is most evident in shopping centers.

Your mechanic might want to learn a building trade.

When I was a kid fifty years ago, car mechanics worked on an an assigned time scale.

If they did a job assigned a time value of 30 minutes, they got paid on that 30 minute amount whether they took 20 minutes or 50 minutes to do the job.
