A group of young men allegedly ripped off $2 million in COVID-19 relief funds by stealing personal information from people in the assistance program, funneling their money to personal bank accounts, and withdrawing the cash at banks in Brooklyn and Queens.
Many of the young men flaunted their ill-gotten fortunes on social media, posting pictures of themselves with large piles of cash, court documents show.
Six of the eight defendants — ranging in age from 18 to 25 — were charged Tuesday in Brooklyn federal court, documents show. Two suspects — Armani Miller, 24, and Johan Santos, 19 — are still at large, prosecutors said.
The suspects were caught with a combined total of more than 100 Key Bank debit cards in other peoples names, that they used to make brazen simultaneous large withdrawals from Capital One ATMs in Flatlands and various locations in eastern Queens, documents and surveillance images allege.

I’m trying to find a bright side here; at least these guys thought big and obviously had developed some technical skills while in school. Beats clubbing someone on the head with a pipe over a wallet.

I have a friend who works for a large urban police department. Mainly drug investigations.
He said it’s amazing how many solid cases he puts together just following these morons online and letting them implicate themselves.

A friend who worked for the NC SBI did child porn cases and said the idiots always documented their crimes. They would argue that they were hacked but couldn’t explain the CD’s grouped by age with their handwriting on them.

I was talking to a friend of mine last night. His daughter just graduated law school. She interned at a public defender office for a while.
She said it was amazing how the very people she was trying to help would lie to her face repeatedly.
I believe it. I work in the insurance defense industry as an fraud investigations manager. We've found claimants for worker's comp back injuries posting pictures of their weightlifting competitions, people posting pictures of their car accidents during times when their policies lapsed (then reporting the accident and filing claims after they reinstated their policies). Social media is a gold mine.
During the 2009 recession, I was given the opportunity to find a new job. After flying out for an interview, I came home and told my family the interview went well and was expecting an offer.
My then teenage daughter immediately posted it to facebook. She got upset when I told her to delete it.
I told her that I had no idea how sophisticated the company was about doing background on prospective employees and I didn’t want them to see that post somehow.
(In retrospect, they weren’t nearly that sophisticate and I did get the job)
It’s positively Clintonian. There are no penalties for lying unless you are a conservative or Republican so you may as well do it. It costs nothing.
