I'd gone to a doctor's appointment this morning. Stopped by McDonald's before returning to work. Walked in so I could use the restroom. My order came to $6.87. I gave the girl $20.87. Went downhill from there.
She handed me $13.13. I said, "No, you need to give me $14" She replied, "I can't, the register says I have to give you $13.13".
Called the manager over. She had punched in $20 instead of $20.87.
The manager said "Give him $14" The girl was all flustered. "But, the register says..."
"Give him $14"
Sad commentary on today's kids. I guess they're skilled in demonstrating with ANTIFA and BLM but can't figure out how to do change.
Okay, pre-covid, I was getting changed for bed and noticed that my right foot seemed swollen and larger than my left, also my right calf seemed larger than the left. I had a pain in the muscle in the calf. Went to the doctor next day and got and ultrasound. Found out I had a blood clot in my leg.
He gave me a prescription for a blood thinner and it worked rather quickly. Don't delay, go to the doctor. It may not be a blood clot; but, better to be sure.
One of my favorite ways to screw them up is to give them a few pennies to make the change come back as a quarter. That completely blows their minds.
“Don’t blame the kids, it’s not their fault that their idiot parents consider keeping up with the Jones more important than protecting their kids from the public schools. Something like 80% to 90% of the people I work with send their kids to those schools...and virtually all of them can afford not to. But what the heck, their free!!!!!?”
You ever notice that people’s opinions of public schools are like their opinions of congressman; theirs is great. It’s all the others that are crap. I saw a note from my niece’s teacher. It said, verbatim, “talk to much, do not listen”. She’s supposed to be teaching this kid to speak proper English.
My son used an extra room and put computers and three office desks in it. Bulletin and chalk boards for their use. And Library cases. Painted and carpeted as their class room. The girls were taught by teachers over the computer. And by the way those teachers were available all the time to help if they needed it.
The movie was not meant to be a documentary...
The Major enters the General's office, towing some little meek-looking civilian, exclaiming "I've found a solution!!"
The General says "Show Me." and the Major asks Mr. Meek, "How much is 5 x 6?" "30". "It's a trick!" says the General. The Major says "Ask him one yourself."
He asks a toughie: "How much is 15 x 5?" Mr. Meek says, without hesitation, "75".
"It's a breakthrough!" the Major tells the General. "All we have to do is replace those costly computers with cheap humans who can calculate!"
Earth implemented the new scheme and won the war.
I think of that every time I go to click on the Calculator icon for some simple math. Sometime it is hard. :-)
On a funny but sad note, check out THIS YouTube classic. (5 second ad precedes)
I usually do what you did, give the change so I don’t break another bill.
I’ve had cashiers, looked to be 30, look at me like I was crazy. I would take the time to explain the concept and they act like I was explaining old English coinage. A half cent? A quarter cent? PENCE?? TUPPENCE???? WAAAAHHHH!!
A manager at a convenience store finally clued me in. A lot of the younger people use strictly plastic, debit or credit cards and never actually handle cash.
Sad, just sad.
I am told that some agencies and companies will under no circumstances hire a homeschool has grad. One of these being the USMC.
"Here's 87 cents" [hand her the change]
"And here's a 20" [hand her the bill]
That often works, even with the apparent illegals working the drive-thru. I normally don't have to add "So you give me back $14"
Unfortunately in this instance, she was totally oblivious to my speaking and just punched in a 20 on her register.
Roast beef at the deli is sold by the pound. I told the high school kid working the counter “I’ll take four ounces.”
He said “I can’t do that.”
I said “why not?”
He said “Because we sell it by the pound, not the ounce.” Holey Moley, I thought! It was time for some fun and education.
“OK, how many ounces in a pound?”
To which he replied “I don’t know.”
I said “there are sixteen ounces in a pound. I want to buy four ounces. What fraction of a pound am I buying?”
Again, “I don’t know.”
I asked “what is four divided by 16?
“I don’t know.”
Believe it or not, it got far worse from there. I eventually gave up and said “I will take a quarter pound.”
If he wasn’t white, he’d probably land a job as an aircraft design engineer at Boeing or in the cockpit of a United jet.
I see this a lot. And give them a 2 dollar bill and they don’t believe it’s real or give you change for a 20 or mistake it for a 20.
“I am told that some agencies and companies will under no circumstances hire a homeschool has grad. One of these being the USMC.”
Apparently not anymore...
“You ever notice that people’s opinions of public schools are like their opinions of congressman; theirs is great.”
Yea, it’s normal to be defensive. Look at it the other way, if they admit their schools suck, but they still send their kids to those schools, what does that say about those parents?
...and that’s part of why the schools continue to operate open-loop.
Reading clocks and maps is gone for good.
Reading clocks and maps are gone for good.
********
You basically don’t need a clock anymore as long as you have
a cell phone. Directions are just a phone or automobile away.
The world has changed drastically from when Columbus sailed
the ocean blue.
I’m actually impressed that the manager knew and did the right thing.
How did the register screw up?
It didn't.
It was most assuredly operator error.
There’s a classic.
Reminds me of how people will buy all sorts of expensive equipment and costly supplies for something like photography or painting, then do hardly anything with them, because they think the talent should just magically appear.
As compared to those with some actual talent or ambition, who will sketch or doodle on any available surface with anything at hand.
