Sad commentary on the state of education / reliance on computers
Self | 18 May 2021 | COBOL2Java

I'd gone to a doctor's appointment this morning. Stopped by McDonald's before returning to work. Walked in so I could use the restroom. My order came to $6.87. I gave the girl $20.87. Went downhill from there.

She handed me $13.13. I said, "No, you need to give me $14" She replied, "I can't, the register says I have to give you $13.13".

Called the manager over. She had punched in $20 instead of $20.87.

The manager said "Give him $14" The girl was all flustered. "But, the register says..."

"Give him $14"

Sad commentary on today's kids. I guess they're skilled in demonstrating with ANTIFA and BLM but can't figure out how to do change.

This has been going on for a while. I remember learning how to make change properly back in the 80s when I was in elementary school. Once calculators became the norm, critical math skills went out the window.

The memorization of multiplication and division tables. Doing addition and subtraction by hand with a pencil. Showing your work. What arcane outdated concepts!

Besides figuring things out in your head, we were taught how to do math on an abacus when I was in grammar school back in the early 50’s.

Geez I am old enough to remember a time when the kid at the register in MickeyD’s actually had to had to add up the bill before making change and could usually do it in his head. Of course the numbers were smaller back then. A hamburger fries and milkshake was something like 47 cents. It is sad really what has happened to education in this country. But of course we all know the real problem is math is racist right?

We learned about the abacus, and it was offered as an option during tests; but most folks didn’t understand it. I used it quite a bit, and I can still do math in my head while visualizing those little disks/beads.

A year or so ago I went to the local supermarket’s deli counter and asked for 3/4 of a pound of roast beef. The girl (appearing to be just out of high school) looked really confused but started to slice the meat. At a half pound she asked if that was correct. Said, no, another 1/4 lb please. Her supervisor was standing nearby and came over to help her.

This has been going on for a while.

I had a similar incident occur to me about 30 years ago.

When she gets home she'll tweet that she was bullied at work today by a mean customer and she'll need to take an emotional health day off tomorrow.

And her friends will sympathize with her and attempt to Dox you.

"We learned about the abacus,"

Most kids, and probably a large number of their teachers today don't even know what one is. The only thing that technology has done for people, is to offer them the opportunity to be lazy, and plenty have chosen that option.

I’m NOT impressed with the quality of teachers the education industry is putting out... Too much WOKE and CRT stuff - well programmed machines would be better.

Public schools don’t teach this stuff. Now ask the gal when the earth will end and she’ll tell you 9 years 4 months 5 days and 34 minutes.

When I still lived in Brooklyn I was watching TV and they were interviewing teachers. This was the late 80s.

One lady proudly proclaimed "I teaches English"

I credit understanding the abacus with my quick uptake on binary, octal, and hex in computer science classes.

Physicians are doing that in diagnosing you....punch into a computer symptoms and up pops the solutions.

You were fortunate in that although the cashier was incompetent, at least she didn’t turn that into a reason to be rude to you, just to hide her embarrassment.
Lo’quisha would have said you were just being ‘racist’.

You were also lucky that the right type of manager was there.
Women have been in the workplace for well over 100 years, but many people still act overprotective of them when they make ‘a mistake’ or meet a customer who calls out that mistake.
This ‘urge to protect the girl’ happens the most when the woman is young.

Be thankful that girl is working at the McDonalds and not at your doctor’s office.
