Sorry, but this is a particularly dumb theory regarding some admittedly suspicious coincidences. A permanent “body double” that is good enough to fool the thousands of people that come into contact with the President is still the stuff of sci-fi even today.
If GHWB or someone else did try to have Reagan offed, the only reasonable idea is that the attempt failed. And assuming for the sake of argument that the motivation was what this person suggests, Reagan’s “change of heart” would have been due to the message having been received.

Seems like most FR’s either have never heard of Operation Mockingbird, or if they have, have not thought thru how much it’s infected the media.
You make a great point - essentially, using the Scientific Method of considering a postulation on its merits, and either rejecting or accepting it, and then moving on. For some, they might apply that to GlowBull Warming, but reject it for things like Hinckley’s activities, or 911, or any number of other big stories we’ve been “fed” over the decades. Operation Mockingbird is real, and has been officially known from the early 1950’s.
Another poster referred to “empty white house and junk like that”. Clearly, this “FR” has done no homework of his/her own, and just shrugs off others with nary a care in the world. I invite him/her to tune into the WH Live Cam tonight at 10:59 and watch it for 2 minutes.
Men trying to take out other men has been a thing for millennia. If the discussion were just about the assassination attempt, it would be a reasonable discussion regarding evidence of third party involvement or lack thereof.
But this conspiracy theory crosses the line from “Let’s discuss the evidence” into “Uh, oh, nuttiness!” because it requires some sort of permanent “body double” that is good enough to fool everybody for over two decades and those do not exist. That’s why there is so much push back.

And, when Nixon was going through his trouble, it was GHWB who told Nixon that "they" would no longer be able to help him intimating that he needed to resign. Afterwards Nixon told a close friend that he did not want happening to him what happened to JFK.
Then, isn't it tremendously curious that the guy who shot Reagan was not an acquaintance but the son of close personal friends to the Bush family, where the death of Reagan would mean the immediate ascendance of GHWB to the presidency.
It is just real, real curious.

That being said, you have to wonder if the goal of shooting Reagan was not to kill him but to give him a warning. The "lone nut" being the son of a close friend of the elder Bush is suspicious on its face. But if the intent were to kill Reagan, there would have been at least one more assassin, as was the case with JFK and RFK. Hinckley was no professional, less skilled than Lee Harvey Oswald. In any case, GHWB got his chance in 1988, at which point he had convinced enough conservatives that he would be at least tolerable. After the assassination, Reagan moved away from hard-core conservative domestic policies, with David Stockman and James Watt leaving the Administration.
The two unsuccessful attempts on Gerald Ford have not been discussed. Nelson Rockefeller was from a family very closely tied to financial and political power. But as a liberal Republican, he would never have been chosen by his party in 1976 or 1980. I don't know enough about Squeaky Fromme, a Manson family member, or Sara Jane Moore, a left wing activist. I can't tie the two women to the Deep State of the time, or to the Rockefeller interests. But when you ask the question, cui bono, the answer is obvious.
Of course GHWB was involved in it. But no way on the body double. Occam’s razor. Who gains the most? Who was connected to those involved? Who has been involved in such shenanigans in the past? To think that a family friend being involved was just random noise is sheer stupidity.
All these posters I’ve never seen before being derisive have me thinking you could be onto something.
