Hindsight's 20-20 right? As a young lefty I was for it. Was the South worth dying for? It wasn't. The people that went-were they chumps? Misguided perhaps. The seed may have been planted when JFK said we'd pay any price, bear any burden. Was that reckless just as he lived his life? We are much more mature nation as a result. It took Iraq/Afghanistan to open my eyes. Gulf of Tonkin didn't happen. Where were the WMD? After 911 we bomb Iran's infrastructure, put them in the stone age and threaten to do it again. It would not have cost a trillion. Happy Sunday.
However, not pardoning them would have greatly weakened the future Left in this country ... which would have been better for us than pardoning them.
I’ve heard a few still live in Canada and are now citizens.
Bombing Iran makes as much sense as invading Iraq when 16 of the hijackers were Saudis.
When Carter pardoned the draft dodgers I felt like burning my honorable discharge. Another slap in the face to those who served.
These evolving opinions come with old age. Do we retreat and let the wolves take over the world? It took strongmen like Saddam and Stalin to keep their countries together. Look what happened to Lybia. Haiti is closer to home. It will never join the developed nations. No solution.
So what brought this subject up this morning?
There are pros and cons to everything. You present yourself as a libertarian, but now you are an idealist.
You most like would not like the results of not going after Saddam either.
You have a fairly skewed view on apples and oranges.
I read through to the 8th sentence.
I am a disabled Vietnam vet, and would pay ticket price to watch a slap-flare installed and ignited in the author’s alimentary canal!!!!
The pardoning act is curious in that it was a poke in the eye to the military. What’s going on today with the new administration? The military is a convenient scapegoat for the left. One of Clintons first actions was to speak out on homosexuals in the military. See a pattern? He went looking for a fight where the military could not stand up for itself.
The guys that went were the good guys, the Americans we wish we had today. They were the representatives of old.America. The ones that didn’t are the torch bearers of the trashy society of today. Try are the allies of Bill Ayers. Don’t make those scum into heroes.
I was a volunteer to help Carter get elected. His pardoning of the Draft Dodgers was the deal breaker for me. I have never voted for any democRAT since. The debacle in the Iranian desert (Operation Eagle Claw) was the “icing on that cake”.
That’s a fact.
I think the pardon help clear the actions of John F’en Kerry from security review that would have precluded him from federal service , but I could be wrong.
Who the hell are you to call them misguided? Maybe you’re right, maybe you’re wrong. I just know you have no standing to judge them. And speaking of misguided....
“Bombing Iran makes as much sense as invading Iraq when 16 of the hijackers were Saudis”.- U R right.
“You most like would not like the results of not going after Saddam either.” Name one.
“I am a disabled Vietnam vet, and would pay ticket price to watch a slap-flare installed and ignited in the author’s alimentary canal!!!!-”Being a vet doesn’t make you a better person.
“I just know you have no standing to judge them.” My opinion is not a judgement. Getting on with our lives is what’s important. This action helped the nation as well.
The author is nothing more than a chicken liver draft dodger justifying his cowardice.
They were both genocidal psychopaths. As my WWII Father once said, we should have destroyed Stalingrad while we had the resources in theater. I believe Patton said the same. As for Saddam, he did have WMD's, he used chemical warfare on his own citizens. Why the entire world thinks WMD only means nukes is beyond me. But that's what the world thought.
"Look what happened to Lybia."
Big mistake by Obambi and Hillary. Kaddafi was a benevolent dictator after Reagan put him in his place. He even offered up his WMD's. Now it's a mess and home to ISIS cells and many other jihadists.
Aftganiscrap was our biggest mistake, even though the radical Taliban were harboring al-Queda.
I really want to post my bunny-pancake pix, but I can’t since tinypic went down.
