Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary reflects on ‘Just Causes,’ the story behind ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’

The legendary folk singer's latest album benefits multiple charities

At age 83, Noel Paul Stookey still has plenty to say.

The singer/songwriter, known as the "Paul" in the ‘60s folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, recently released "Just Causes," a compilation of 15 songs, each highlighting a theme of social concern, including the environment, hunger, and drug trafficking, among others. The star paired each song in with an appropriate non-profit organization to benefit from the album’s net proceeds.

And Stookey is no stranger to singing for a good cause. The group’s version of "If I Had a Hammer" became an anthem for racial equality. The band famously performed Bob Dylan’s "Blowin’ in the Wind" at the August 1963 March on Washington. They also protested the Vietnam war and joined the fight to improve the working conditions of California’s farmworkers – just to name a few. Stookey spoke to Fox News about releasing "Just Causes," his favorite memory with Peter Yarrow and Mary Travers, the real story behind "Puff the Magic Dragon," and becoming a born-again Christian.

reminds me of the scene in Animal House where Belushi smashed the guitar of a guy was singing “If I Had a Hammer”. Couldn’t find the video.

Now, that is funny!

There's a video on youtube of PP&M doing “Hammer” at Newport (approx ‘62/’63). Say what you will but Mary was the star of that group as evidenced by that Newport performance.

Anyone who uses a hammer to instill a worldview of love, justice, and freedom, is doing it wrong.

Of course, if the desired end is actually something else, then a hammer makes total sense.

Understood. It is interesting how talents are distributed. Unevenly within society. And unevenly within individuals. I happen to think that PP&M were a pretty good singing act. But then as now (!) their understanding of American values lacks any visible smarts. I think barbara Streisand and a few other actors have great stage talent but zero understanding of much else. On stage, they sound and act well. Off stage and off script, They look and sound like idiots ( or outright enemies ? ). Winners yes in the one arena, miserable losers - not even mediocre or just average / but totally untalented in the other. Strange. But interesting imho.

Here’s the real name of the song,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Riddle_Song

Smashing the guitar was totally unscripted, an ad lib by Belushi. Rather than fix the hole in the wall, the real frat put a frame around it and a plaque. The house has since been torn down.

The singer was Stephen Bishop. His biggest hits include “On and On”, “It Might Be You” and “Save It for a Rainy Day”. He lived with actress Karen Allen for a couple offew

Another contribution the group unintentionally added to pop culture was in a male-male-female threesome, the female is called a Mary.
