I like Cassavetes as an actor, but when he directed his films, I think in a lot of cases, he didn't really have much of a script.

He just let the actors ad-lib with a general outline of where he wanted them to go.

His father was a bad alcoholic and he modeled his act on him. He himself did not drink.

I wondered that myself, but didn't stay to the end. Perhaps that's why she was being denied help (early) in getting up from the floor.
