How on Earth would I know what research has or hasn’t been done behind closed doors, particularly at a lab inside China, a country notorious for its secrecy and outright lying to conceal its actions?
Probably one of the few things you and I will agree on with any of this is that there is zero reason to trust China at all. Their lies about SARS-CoV-2 have led to many many thousands of unnecessary deaths of people in the US, Italy, and other places.

What about US research, since you seem especially interested in diverting attention away from that at all costs?
I know nothing of the Children's Defense Fund, except the name makes me suspicious ("It's for the Chirrun," as Rush Limbaugh, God rest his soul, used to say.)
But they're filing an FOIA against the NIH, for *not* being particularly forthcoming with documentation about funding of gain-of-function research.
Lack of transparency is one of the things bad guys do.
So not at all proof, you know, but it *is* congruent.
Be nice to see what they cough up.
Next stop: someone connects the dots on funding and patents held or shared or stock owned by govt. bureaucrats and/or Congresscritters.

When former Director of the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) Robert Redfield said in March that “the most likely etiology of this pathogen in Wuhan was from a laboratory, you know, escaped,” people should have taken him seriously. Now The Epoch Times’ Nicole Hao has reported that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the military arm of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), “collaborated” with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). However, Hao noted, the Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry and Shi Zhengli, “the WIV virologist nicknamed ‘Bat Woman’ for her research on coronaviruses of bat origin,” have denied that there was a connection between the PLA and WIV: “’I don’t know any military work at the WIV. That information is incorrect,’ said Shi at a public webinar on March 23, 2020.”
The U.S. State Department disagrees. One of its fact sheets states, “The WIV has engaged in classified research, including laboratory animal experiments, on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017.”
