Age is a terrifying thing for a lot of people. Your body is not as nimble as it was before, you start to forget things, and people generally tend to live in the memories of the glorious past rather than creating new ones. When it comes to big rock musicians it hits even harder since artists start losing the very energy that gave them fame and fortune. It’s tempting to just continue riding your name till the very end not releasing anything relevant and just exploiting your catalog of classics, but some bands have the courage to finish while they're still strong and able. Let's take a look at 7 rock and metal bands who called it quits at just the right time.

I’d call Tattoo You a better album than Some Girls. And I like Some Girls. but Tattoo You has Waiting on a Friend for the win.

I thought Waiting On a Friend was actually recorded in 1972.

Any of you heard of The Offspring? Lead singer has a PhD in virology (I think). 30+ years. Glad they haven't quit.

They’d been monkeying with it for years, written definitely, maybe recorded but thrown out. Didn’t get that sax solo until it hit Tattoo You and became one of the best in their catalog.

Offspring’s still around?! Man I haven’t listened to them in ages. I like em though. I like how they make fun of the teenage angst punk is built. And Bad Habit is just awesome.

It’s a good song, but really to me that and Start Me Up, and Hang Fire are the only memorable songs from the album.

Worried About You, Slave, No Use Crying. There’s good stuff. And it sold a lot of copies. If you’re talking about relevancy Some Girls through Tattoo You is the Stones most relevant period. Even though Emotional Rescue blows. 6x platinum, double platinum, quadruple platinum. Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exiles, while clearly being superior in quality, went double, triple and single. The casual fan, your 80/20 folks, have the ‘78 to ‘82 albums.

I think Led Zeppelin went out like James Dean, but the Stones, The Who and too many other groups are going out like Marlon Brando.

But do you think, outside of “Start Me Up”, the casual Stones fan wants to hear anything they did from 1980 onwards?

Yep, at least 4 of the 7!

Derek and the Dominos - one studio and one double LP live album.

Make your mark and walk away.

LOL! I like ELP but have never listened to that album. They did a pretty good job on their “Black Moon” album when they got back together in the early 90’s(?). Not like the old ELP stuff - but it was good.

When my baby boy would not go to sleep I would put the album on and hold him and walk around. By the third song he would be asleep.

Not a fan of this article written by someone missing the proper perspective

Not well informed...

No excuse for Zep with Bonzos son to stand in....yes he’s good enough and oh so eager....he adores these men

And Page and true heart of the band Jonsey wanting to carry on ....

No....it was Plants sense of self of not wanting to be always known just for Zeppelin

Plants post Zep stuff is good and varied as is Page with the Robinsons etc

And Jones producing and sitting in etc

But man....no question they could have still made great stuff after giving it a 5-10 year break after Bonham death

What a waste.....the fans begged for it

Page, wee Bonham and Jones and every label or promoter from here to the Oort belt also begged for it

But Plant .....just wasn’t wanting to be pigeonholed with medieval blues trippy rock.....

Damn pity

Instead he chose to hang out in rural Nashville environs and ball some hot local soccer moms who literally fell at his feet at local watering holes in Franklin and Brentwood and just hang out and make Americana music with Alison Krauss and T Bone Burnet ....which as I already said was nice music....but I mean come on....

Thing is Plant is a nice guy and approachable

One of my top five pals here has traveled with him and calls him a friend and really likes him.....rural Nashville area

And my buddy like me wishes Zep had reformed at some point ...but it’s a touchy subject

So no I don’t agree with that one ....the others are nonsensical

I put on Rover for this....followed by Evermore....the battle of

I can’t help myself

Led Zeppelin is my youth....in one band....69-82

Ages 12-25

You had to be there..anyone else understand this?

Zep was my favorite band at one point as a kid. Then I grew up and learned that they truly were dabbling in the occult while making their music. Haven’t listened to a single full song of theirs in decades now.
