Why this Pennsylvania town is the pizza capital of the world

Old Forge is a small borough about 75 miles north of the Lehigh Valley.

But while its downtown looks like a lot of other Main Street districts, Old Forge is more than just another small Pennsylvania town. It’s the pizza capital of the world.

That’s a bold claim, of course. But Old Forge has a mom-and-pop pizza joint around every corner and a special way of doing their thing — one that residents of Northeast PA will tell you is the best you’ll ever have.

In the interest of journalism, I needed to check this out for myself.

We love Arcaro and Genell, we stopped there the first time after attending a wake in the area, the food outside of the pizza was delicious and as the article says, the staff is fabulous! We have been back (pre-pandemic) and we will be heading back down that way soon! (Oh and we have had the Za, and it is a real treat!)

I have this to say... Old Forge/Moosic has great pizzas. Growing up, my relatives lived in the area and I loved it, but New Haven is just a bit better. Down the street from my great aunt, the pizza place was Old Forge little Italy... Italian spoken (and I spoke it).

When I was a student at Gettysburg College we regularly went into Maryland to go to Stavros Pizza in Emmitsburg. That was 30 years ago and they’re still in business.

I’d like to try it, but “sweet sauce” and “thick crust” (not deep dish, just a lot of dough) doesn’t sound great to me. The only time I had pizza in NE PA, many years ago with some relatives, it was a pretty unimpressive square cheese pizza

From Chicago and no fan of their pizza. I once repaired cash registers and this particular one was in the cooking area, guy was flipping doe and it fell on the floor, he actually looked around and saw me before he tossed it. A major chain in the area, not the only time I saw that, they always look to see if anyone sees them .I know they will use it if nobody sees them.

I like pizza with a little more sauce... not quite deep dish Chicago style.. but just enough the crust isn’t dry and I get a sort of “breadsticks and sauce” at the end...

I have eaten many New Haven Pizza’s - I actually like Modern over Sally’s and Frank Pepe

People have tried to make New Haven style in other parts of the US - it isn’t the same.

Wow! Small world!

It IS closed.

But I had to look up since you mentioned Emmitsburg.

We went to Ski Liberty several years back and heading toward home, we looked to eat some dinner. Ended up going to Stavros! I can tell because of the map and the fact I KNOW we were across the corner from the Ott House.

The map says it is permanently closed. Wonder if the “pandemic” did it.

“Anybody know of a good tasty sauce (or can of truly tasty tomatoes) I can buy at a store in 2021?”

San Marzanos are the best canned tomatoes in the world, the crème de la crème, the gold standard by which all others must be judged. Back in the day, hunting down a can of them took time and effort; nowadays, you’ll find a few different varieties on the shelves in most supermarkets.

There are fakes around in stores. Get the real ones in THIS CAN:

That’s a shame Stavros is closed. I was there over Christmas vacation in 2019. Must be another Covid casualty :(
That place was an institution for both Gettysburg College and Mount Saint Mary’s students for many, many years.

I like bertolli and dei fratelli tomato sauces. I have some on hand when I’m out of homemade. They are the closest to the taste I make at home.

The Europeans keep the good stuff and send us the garbage. Was on Rhodes a few years ago. Olives, Olive oil with fresh baked bread, and goat cheese. Everything tasted like candy.
