... the researchers claim it could be possible in the future to detect early signs of dementia using either a smartphone app or devices incorporated into car software systems.
Over the course of the LongROAD study, 33 subjects were diagnosed with MCI (mild cognitive impairment) and 31 with dementia. A series of machine learning models were trained on the LongROAD data, tasked with detecting MCI and dementia from driving behaviors.
Nevertheless, the study does point to intriguing future scenarios where a smartphone app, or software inside a car, can constantly monitor your driving patterns to offer clues for early detection of cognitive decline before clinical symptoms become apparent

Just ‘cause a dog is chained to the porch doesn’t mean he cant howl at the traffic!
I bet Joe couldn’t do it.
This conforms with my personal observations as some of my family members aged. There's clearly a sense that develops of a loss of confidence, and awareness that one is "losing one's edge", manifest in part by a reluctance to drive too far away, or to new places.
Getting them to give up the car keys is still a trial though.
> They will fall for the same scams over and over. <
It’s a bit of a side point, but it infuriates me that the government doesn’t warn folks - especially older folks - about these scams. There should be a notice included in every government letter (Social Security, etc.) that is sent out.
And public service announcements on the TV and radio would help too.
I only know about these scams because I stumbled across across a few YouTube videos that described them. And I’ve alerted my older relatives. But how many folks don’t know? Way too many.
I’m over sixty and I drive around with my left blinker going all the time.
Do I qualify?
Sure, send all those probable dementia drivers out onto the road.
Or in MD/DE.
You can tell them Monday - Saturday and they will fall for it on Sunday. The only thing saving my aunt right now is that she doesn’t have a car or a credit card.
Holy crap. You just gave dementia to the entire under 30 crowd.
Anyone can make a mistake
I remember reading once about a family that decided they had to take Grandma’s keys away after she asked her 16-year-old grandson to write out instructions for starting the car and tape them to the dashboard. Think about that next time you se a big old Buick coming with a little wisp of white hair visible above the steering wheel....
What does Dementia Joe think of this?
One of the worst things you can do for Dementia is watch TV.
Edited for accuracy.
One of the hardest steps to take, not least because it’s often the first, is to get them to give up the independence that a car provides.
Can be terribly wrenching.
Which also detects millennials, texting of course, then looking up.
For my day job, I'm moving a Windows app into a Docker container and building a concurrent REST interface as a supplement to the current Java RMI. Currently developing on Windows 10 with VMware Workstation Pro to host a Windows 10 Pro 20H2 VM that internally hosts/build the Docker image/container. The image build includes Windows 10 20H2, OpenJDK 1.8 as base image plus silent InstallShield installations of the application, patches and databases.
I work from home, so I do little driving. Mostly a passenger going to dinner with my wife driving. I prefer to hop on my motorcycles when traveling by myself.
I'm not fretting about dementia at this stage in life
Both my parents are dead, so that’s not something I have to deal with, thank God. My mother-in-law is 81, still fairly sharp mentally, but her eyesight is deteriorating.
I don’t know yet who’s going to take my keys away, but I’m only 65 and I hope I have some time left. My grandmother was still driving at 99, as the oldest licensed driver in that state.
Do they still let JoeK Bimentia behind the wheel of his Vett?
—”If you are wearing a hat in the car, you are likely too old to drive.”
But all of my cars are right-hand drive!
And that hat is called a driving hat!!!
Lacking in fur I need something to keep my noggin warm.
