A prosecutor told Lyke that two cops pulled the man over for running a red light and asked him to step out of his car. Instead, the man allegedly rolled his window up on one of the officer’s arms and drove off as the cop’s partner shattered the window to free the first cop.
The man later punched a police sergeant at the station lock-up, prosecutors said.
“Here I am. I’m a judge and I probably know the law better than 99.9% of the people on this planet and if an officer stops me for whatever reason, asks me for my ID and I give it to him and my insurance — and in fact it happened to me about a month ago — you know what I did? I gave him my license and my insurance. He ran it. He came back. He said, ‘Sir step out of the car.’”
“You know what I did? I didn’t start questioning him — ‘Hey! Whatchu doing? What am I doing here?’ Nah. I got myself out of the car.”
“Walk to the back,” the cop told Lyke.
“You know what I did? I walked to the back.”
“Did I kick and scream? No. Did I start quizzing him, ‘Why you want me to get out of the car?’ No. Because I know the Supreme Court said, [if police] say get out the car, YOU GOTTA GET OUT.”
“You’re never gonna win on the street. Never. You gotta come to court. And if you think the officer’s wrong, that’s where you air your grievances out. Not on the street. Because only bad things can happen.”

"There are eight million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them."
*IF* the story the judge told the guy is true, I’ll bet the judge used a bit of his “behind the scenes” pull to ‘explain’ to that cop why he should not do that on a regular basis.
Something not available to those of us outside the judicial system, no?
Always tell mine that the only place to argue with a LEO is in court. Don’t answer questions but follow directions.
This has been making the rounds.
1. America is capitalist and greedy -
yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized -
yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims -
yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government -
yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer -
yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about -
yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
“behind the scenes” pull to ‘explain’ to that cop...”
I think it was the other way around. Cop knew who he was pulling over. Judge was the one that got the message.
This was a Zoom hearing, I believe everyone hears everything?
That said, the Judge may be telling the story to get it out there?
Don’t know about other places, but the Judges in Chicago seem to be in total control.
Once as I sat in traffic court, the Judge entered and said, ‘everyone with a DUI, move to the left.
Then announced, ‘today is Mayor Daley’s birthday and everyone on the right side, case dismissed’!!!
I was very happy to be on the right.
“I was very happy to be on the right.”
Equal Justice under the Law remains a vision. One that is currently receding.
It is foolish and dangerous to accept the idea that at ANY and at ALL times ANY citizen must obey ANY request from ANY law enforcement officer.
In the case of a vehicle stop that may be a valid order for the safety of all involved depending on the circumstances.
But what, if, while passing by you observe, are gawking at Loveland Police officers beating down, err, taking down, err, arresting a dangerous 90lb 73 year old woman, and one of the officers engaged in the activity directs you to stop.(Not like there haven’t been innumerable cases of “You want some of this?”)
Should you be required by law to do so ?
this sort of crap every day... it leaves a mark. You become “jaded” by it.
Oh, like this judge? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6n_SC5xgeA
