The hapless Admiral Kuznetsov has suffered engine failures, fires, fatal accidents, and even embezzlement.

BY KYLE MIZOKAMI APR 21, 2021 russia's admiral kuznetsov aircraft carrier and pyotr velikiy battlecruiser return from 2016 syria missionLEV FEDOSEYEVGETTY IMAGES Russian state media claims the country’s only aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov, will be ready for sea trials in 2022. Russia lacks the money and shipyards to build a replacement for Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov has suffered engine failures, fatal accidents, crashes, fires, and even embezzlement of funds to update the ship. Russia’s only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, will reportedly emerge from its refit in 2022. That’s at least according to Russian state media, which quotes an anonymous source in the country’s shipbuilding industry.

The carrier, which has earned the reputation of a cursed ship, is in dire need of a replacement, but Russia lacks the funds and industrial capability to fully commit.

➡ You love badass ships. So do we. Let’s nerd out over them together. Kuznetsov is receiving a modest upgrade that will increase the number of Su-33 and MiG-29 strike fighters the ship can carry from 24 to 26, according to Business Insider. The $715 makeover also includes new electronic warfare, communications, and networking systems; new boilers and pumps; the Pantsir-M close-in weapon system; and new flight systems to aid in launching and recovering aircraft, Defense World reports. The ship will even receive a new $3.4 million paint job.

Russia's Cursed Carrier Is Coming Back to Sea. Maybe.

Is it going to be towed? On its last cruise, intending to go through the Mediterranean, did it not have to turn back before even halfway to Gibraltar?

That’s not all. In 2018, the ship was damaged when a sinking drydock knocked a hole in it, which complicated planned upgrades. In 2019, Kuznetsov caught fire, suffering millions in damages. And last year, the director of the shipyard servicing the ship was arrested for allegedly embezzling approximately $500,000 meant to clean the ship’s fuel tanks.

RELATED STORY

Here’s Every Aircraft Carrier in the World
Russia has announced several efforts over the past 15 years to build Kuznetsov’s replacement. But the country lacks both the funds to invest in a fully modern ship, and the shipyard capacity to build such a large vessel. The result is a continued reliance on an old, decrepit warship that should have left service a long time ago.

Will Kuznetov really be ready for sea trials in 2022? Only time will tell.

“Cursed” is putting it mildly. Given the choice between a tour of duty aboard the Admiral Kuznetsov or at the lead mines at Kolyma I’d be opting for the latter.

new boilers and pumps - those are the important upgrades, the rest are just normal upgrades - will it get a new tug too?

They are doing fine - the first indigenous built one is under going sea trails and the other 4 are modern steam launched flat tops - one or 2 will have the same EMALS launch system the training CVN Ford does.

You know, like WWII Germany, Russia doesn’t have much of a need for carriers. Or for that matter much need for a blue water navy either. They control something like 1/6 of the earth and get their food, oil and minerals internally.
What they have a need for is a big effective submarine fleet to launch ICBMs and interdict countries that must rely on open sea lanes to project power.

And I’m beginning to think that particular ship is cursed. They’ll probably change the name of it and ensure even more disaster. Or bringing women on board, that’ll do the same thing.

Hmmm... Just so they don't ever sail in the Sea Of Japan (Tsushima Strait) again...
