Electric Cars?

Don't rush to buy an electric vehicle.
Can we show a little forethought and practicality?
Has anyone thought about it? If all cars were electric ... and were caught up in a three hour traffic jam with dead batteries! Not to mention, that there is virtually no heating in an electric vehicle.
And if you get stuck on the road all night, no battery, no heating !!!
You can try calling 911 to bring women and children to safety! But they can not even come to help you since all roads are blocked! And when the roads become unblocked no one can move! How do you charge the thousands of cars from the traffic jam?
Same problem during summer vacation departures with miles of traffic jams. This will make cars run out of "fuel" and cause never ending traffic jams.
But that, nobody talks about, of course!

Sorry if you are offended. I post hundreds of threads - how many have you? I believe it’s FOUR!!!!
To: sodpoodle
I’m not offended, I just pointed out that it’s stupid. Unlike an ICE-powered car, an EV isn’t burning gas or electricity while stuck in traffic; if anything, a traffic jam is the best use case for an EV.

Our baseline consumption with the HVAC turned off completely was 344 Wh/mile, which implies a possible range of 234 miles. Our second round was with the climate set to 72 degrees and on automatic, where the Model 3 consumed energy at a rate of 402 Wh/mile, just a tick below 17 percent more energy than the run without HVAC. At that rate of consumption, the predicted range falls to 200 miles. For our final test, with the heat all the way up and the seat heaters on—if you like to carpool in the winter, this number is for you—we measured a whopping 466 Wh/mi, which greatly exceeded even the highest number we got in our aero wheel cover test, and that was on all-season tires traveling at 90 mph. With the heat blasting at that rate you could expect your range to drop to a meager 173 miles by consuming about 35 percent more energy than our baseline run.

I don’t understand this. EVs have many problems, but running out of fuel is just as possible with a gas powered car.

Most gas cars have 300 mile range with a 5 minute “recharge” time. Hard to beat that.

Some time back in the 80’s I drove to northern Michigan with a buddy in the winter. That particular weekend we had a horrible snow storm and it took us about 6 - 8 hours to drive the 280 miles. I don’t think an electric could have made it, especially with the heater that was required.

Everyone I know who has an electric car is happy with them. Granted that's not many, but the number is growing.
That said, I have concerns about the life span of the batteries and what happens when they're used up.

The idea was that some Ev’s could be using electricity even at standstill...heating, a/c, windows, ...and one could have no power if not charged enough or if running low on power.
Now that making synthetic cleaner gasoline from atmospheric co2 and water is possible...the need for Ev’s may decline.

Electric powered vehicle are are proven to be superior to petroleum powered vehicles. With one tinsey winsey little caveat.
The perfect long range battery is just a few years, months or even days away, since 1890

I’ve seen my wife’s attitude about charging things around the house...her phone, laptop, e-watch, electric toothbrush. They only get charged when she needs them...and then it’s usually too late.

Don’t forget the difficult to put out battery fires that occur every so often.

Yes, I have an engineering degree. I also have driven an EV as a daily driver. The premise of the thread, which is that an EV is somehow more likely to run out of fuel than an ICE car while stopped in a traffic jam, is patently ridiculous.

When you are in a hurricane evacuation traffic jam that stretches over a couple of states you will have FEMA on your side. It’ll be fine.
