This One Type of Soda May Increase Liver Cancer Risk, New Study Suggests

You'd do anything to protect your most vital organs and reduce your cancer risk, right? Your food choices, watching how much you drink, and plenty of other practices are proof. Well, a new study is challenging one pesky soda choice you might still be making. Just because it's no-calorie and even sugar-free might not mean you're in the clear.

A meta-analysis of 38 previous studies was published in the March issue of the Public Health Nutrition. The two researchers, Myung Seung-Kwon, M.D., Ph.D. of Korea's National Cancer Center, and Ph.D. student Alfred Jethro, were interested to see how soft drinks with artificial sweeteners are connected with the risk of gastrointestinal cancers—that is, cancer of the colon, stomach, esophagus, pancreas, or liver.

Based on their analysis of the 38 studies, the researchers did not find an association between the overall risk of gastrointestinal cancer and soft drinks. However, when it came to a particular type of cancer, there was clearly a link—from the Korean Biomedical Review: "The sub-analysis on specific types of cancer showed that soda with artificial sweeteners raised the risk of liver cancer by 28 percent."

Seung-Kwon listed "artificial sweeteners" like "aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, neotame, and acesulfame" as compounds that are "used in soft drinks because they can reduce calories." Why? Because they're "hundreds to thousands of times sweeter than sugar."

A report we published in recent years explains how aspartame blocks an important gut enzyme that can prevent obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. This feature of the artificial sweetener, and others like it, is proof that zero-sugar sodas aren't great for your body, per se.

Even so, while the results of this study are enlightening—and even though there are a number of other health issues these artificial sweeteners have been associated with—the researchers for the current study conclude that there's not enough evidence to suggest that artificial sweeteners do indeed cause liver cancer.

Still, before you crack open that next can of diet of "zero" soda, you may want to read What's Worse: Diet Soda or Regular Soda? Or if you just reach for a soda when you need a fizzy lift, these 10 sparkling waters might be a better bet:

I tried to find the study itself, but it's available by ordering a subscription to Public Health Nutrition.

''I never drink diet pop and I just started drinking sugared pop recently, maybe once or twice a week, and almost always when I get Fast Food which happens maybe once a month.

The artificial sweetener alarms started a long time a go (early 1970's) starting with saccharine. Then it was later determined that saccharine wasn't all that bad for you and it is still being used. Now there are several artificial sweeteners. I know a couple of people who still drink diet pop, but that's about it.

Cola is a must when eating popcorn. Other than that I prefer whole milk with my food.

I'm also drinking a lot of water. I was in rehab for 2-3 weeks for a hip fracture and started enjoying water more. I used to drink a lot beer but only 1 or 2 a week now, and I feel much better for it.

Admin Moderator, can you fix the title for me, please?

Cyclamates will give you bladder cancer if you drink over 500 cans of soda a day.

I use Stevia in my coffee every day. My wife prefers saccharin because that is what she grew up with in England.

I have been using Splenda for many years. I am now 71, I guess I am going to die young.

Heh. I gotta admit I’m a bit embarrassed about it. But I can still see the humor in it.

Do you know how I can get it fixed? I tried pinging the Admin Moderator but the mod hasn’t fixed it yet. Did I use the right handle for the Mod?

Kudos for waking up.

Keeping with a pledge I made long ago to no longer discuss health issues here until I publish my book, I will only write,

“Yeah, but now I wanna know about the cookies.”

I ordered the cookies from Walmart. They should arrive Monday or Tuesday. Not cheap-$18/dozen

"I goofed."

Oh, you don't get away with that so easily. You mentioned Peanut Butter Cookies. Feast your eyes on this...scroll thru Bagley's offerings:

Hit “Report Abuse” under your post and tell them to change the title. That’s the best and fastest way to get something fixed.

I always thought carmelized beverages were tough on the liver.

Probably the one food item I LOVED during elementary school cafeteria lunch...their peanut butter cookies. I can still taste them...and that was a good 60-odd years ago.

Now I’ll go read the article on diet soda. Will also share it with the wife who quit that type of drink probably 5 years ago. Hugely proud of her for that.

I know soda pop is not good for you, but this is the first time I heard that it can be tough on your liver.

That’s great to hear. I hope I make it to 80. I feel better now than I’ve felt in a long time. It wasn’t that long ago that I was so sick that I thought there was at best a 50/50 chance that I survive that year.

Some of the biggest and best Peanut Butter Cookies you’ll ever have. Each cookie can be shared by 2. Comes frozen, just heat for a couple minutes in oven or toaster if you are careful. Individual wrapped. My SiL says the Everything cookie is the bomb but I’ve yet to try them, the chocolate chip are the best I’ve ever had, hands down. Kinda pricey but worth every bite.

Whoa...I could see heating one of those puppies up and dropping a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. That would be supper.
