Takeout contributor Danny Palumbo recently wrote about how the fries at beloved West coast burger chain In-N-Out are very bad. Those are his words, not mine. These are now my words, not his: The fries at In-N-Out are bad. I still eat them, though, usually animal-style (mostly out of novelty, and yes, I know, I know, the fries get weird when the cheese starts cooling off, but I’m well aware of what I’m getting into).
I get the obsession with In-N-Out. The burgers are awesome, and I love my Double-Doubles, animal-style. If I’m in an area that has an In-N-Out, I’ll stop bye, It’s a solid place. But there are great burger places a lot closer to home, too, and I started to wonder: does the Midwest have a spiritual analogue to In-N-Out, something we can only get here, and which is special to us in the same way as Californians embrace In-N-Out? After doing some soul-searching I came to a conclusion. The answer is yes: We’ve got Culver’s.
Now, people often feel the need to compare In-N-Out with Shake Shack. This seems like an unnecessary, played-out, coastal ego war. Shake Shack is great too, but it’s brutally expensive. At the location nearest to me, a double Shackburger, fries, and shake, plus tax, costs around $20. Bye!
By the numbers, Culver’s has the bigger spread, by a long shot. In-N-Out currently has 358 locations in 7 states. Culver’s website indicates 796 locations (as of April 2021) in 25 states, The two states with the most Culver’s locations by far are Wisconsin (where it was founded) with 142 outlets and Illinois with 122. There are four lucky states that get to enjoy both In-N-Out and Culver’s: Utah, Arizona, Texas, and Colorado, for those who want to do a side-by-side comparison.

I think Culver’s burgers are greasy compared to IN N OUT.
I went to a Culvers a few years ago, walked in the door and immediately smelled like something died, instantly walked out - never been in once since.
Yep.
Haven't been in a while, I hope they haven't slipped.
I am more that willing to pay a little more to get that level of quality.
The burger was outstanding but the fries were like my Mom's home-made right from 1965.
Fried, drained and re-fried in fresh hot oil.
.
Been to both many times. Both have strong points.
But, In and Out > Culvers.
Hands down best fast food chicken sandwich.

According to an article here yesterday, they also have the best cod sandwich.
You are right. Crisp fried potatoes need to have had sufficient water replaced by oil, and that takes longer than the time to fry them from raw to done. If french fries are made by frying raw potatoes to doneness in one step, the fries will be fine for about one minute, tops, before the remaining water steams out of the interior and turns them soggy.
I worked at McDonald’s in the early 70s, when they still made fries from raw potatoes, and I have made literally tons of fries (on a good Saturday, we’d go through 900-1000 pounds of potatoes). The method then was to peel the spuds in a rotary drum peeler, then slice them, then rinse the sliced fries three times before blanching them in 280-degree oil. After that, the fries had to be allowed to cool before the final frying at 325. I don’t remember if the frying oil still contained beef tallow at that time, but I think it did.
I don’t know how In-and-Out does theirs. I’ve only eaten there a few times, and didn’t pay much attention to their french-fry system.
No it’s not
Culver fries better than in and out
Cheeee curds good if they heated marinara
But I&O double double animal
Is the dope
No question
1. Culver’s North Atlantic Cod Fillet Sandwich
In and Out is good
My opinion
That guy is sooo wrong! the cornerstone of any meal including breakfast is pizza!!!
You’re in luck. There are Whataburgers in Florida, Alabama and one in Thomasville, Georgia.
I like Culvers. I first discovered one in rural Wisconsin. I’ve since been to others in Austin and Phoenix.
It’s good for fast food. I like their custard shakes too.
But In n Out burgers are way better.
In n Out beats everything else. Five Guys might come closest. Whataburger, Habit etc... In n Out better. Not close.
I don’t know why In n Out are so superior but they are.
I make the best burger of all........
Culver’s?
Nope. Flattened thin jokes of a burger. Fries are halfway decent though. Basing this solely on the ones in the Denver area.
Five Guys might be better but not twice the price or wait better.
They just taste healthier and the staff is always not rude or mad at the world.
Although I like Culvers, the burgers at In-N-Out are way better. We went on a “best of cheeseburgers” and tried around a dozen burger joints from Habit Burger to Hopdoddy, and in my opinion nobody beats In-N-Out, just ask my teenage son, a cheeseburger aficionado!
Plus he is funny....

“why cant they fix the fries!!”
Fries at In n Out are good when they are hot, just cooked.
They get hard when they cool.
They are fresh. They are sliced in to water from potatoes. They aren’t thawed from frozen bags.
Maybe the water takes out too much starch.
Fuddruckers is a restaurant, not fast food.
Their Kobe burger is great but costs a lot more than In n Out.
