Currently, virtually all SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) experiments scan the skies looking for radio or light signals. However, over the years, some researchers have suggested that another, potentially better way to find evidence of alien life is to not look for broadcasts from afar, but instead to hunt for what are essentially messages in a bottle — a SETA (search for extraterrestrial artifacts) approach.
For example, in 2004, researchers suggested that broadcasting a signal across the cosmos is expensive and inefficient. Instead, the scientists calculated that inscribing messages onto a hunk of matter and launching it at potential extraterrestrial pen pals would require about a trillionth as much energy.
Another concern with conventional SETI is that extraterrestrial civilizations may be long dead by the time astronomers do actually detect signals from them. In contrast, extraterrestrial artifacts could provide a way for us to directly learn about alien civilizations, especially if these artifacts are equipped with artificial intelligence...
In the new study, Benford developed a version of the Drake equation for artifacts. The new formula specifically focused on what he calls "lurkers" — hidden and likely robotic extraterrestrial probes. Although the civilizations that deployed these lurkers may well be dead, the lurkers themselves could still be active enough to communicate with us.

So Aliens been lurkin?
Go to the borders. Aliens leave their artifacts everywhere.

Regards,
I think we will find clear evidence of ancient human civilizations. I think humanity cycles to great technological advancement every 20,000 years, then nearby star systems become threatened and send a krap ton of democrats, illegals and muslims to burn it all to the ground
Aliens carefully brought the moon into the earth’s orbit. It is really made of metal and mostly hollow inside, except for the work and sleeping quarters the aliens use. On the dark side of the moon there is a space ship docking bay. The moon is really a giant death star and if we humans get out of line the aliens will blow up the earth.
I was thinking of “Gateway” and the Heechee.
LOL - that was my first thought as well.
Nope, "The Sentinel" predates every other similarly-themed story by decades.
Regards,
The Black Monolith was clearly inspired by Arthur C. Clarke's "2001: A Space Odyssey" / Kubrick's film - but this is markedly different. A rip-off?
Regards,
Understood.
Pohl’s concept was not groundbreaking, but the character of the artifacts in his novels, I believe, is closer to what the author of this so-called “equation” is anticipating.
Actually I got it from a duck duck go image search for “2001 space odyssey artifact”. Didn’t really inspect the image to confirm it was from the film.
I hate it when people do that.
Anyone with a shred of respect for the movie / novel would need about 2 milliseconds to recognize that this image is a forgery / is vaguely inspired by the movie without paying respect.
Regards,
Don’t hate on me, player. Hate the person who faked the image. Or hate duck duck go for putting it at the top of the page :-)
Any ‘left to watch for intelligent beings on earth’ system would have AI incorporated into the system. As such the system would spend more time fixing itself in the distant future from deposit than it would spend watching.
I don't hate the bullet, or the manufacturer of the bullet, or the gun - instead, I hate* the person who takes aim and (or, conversely, closes his eyes and blindly) shoots my Pekinese.
I don't know what "Duck Duck Go" is. So I ask: Did you not see, prior to posting the image, what that image would be? How could anyone want to post an image here without first inspecting it? Or did you view the image and say, "Eh, close enough"?
I'm serious: I'd really like to know!
Regards,
*No, I don't hate you, moneyshine. I'm just making a point.
ROTFL!
