Commodore Perry & Japan/Thomas Jefferson & the Barbary Pirates=Today's Military/Industrial Complex?

Posted on 04/14/2021 7:12:47 AM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

Jefferson took on the kingdoms of Africa to protect our merchants. Japan was needed as a stopover for coal to feed merchant ships. Neither wanted anything to do with the west. Our taxpayers built a military that allowed us to 'capitalize' on resources other nations had to offer. Today China sees the South China Sea as their Monroe Doctrine. Viet Nam and Kuwait had oil resources our oil companies coveted. Neocons ran the country-might still.

The answer lies in a lower standard of living. Hindsight leading to foresight?

Allow others to enslave your citizens at their will. Jefferson had a copy of the Koran translated to help the American people understand their enemy.

The Barbary wars were very popular.

The Muslim kingdoms claimed and demanded tribute, as their right over Christians.

Yes, much of modern prosperity and society depend on enforcing international rules against preying upon shipping.

“ Neither wanted anything to do with the west.”

Seem to me that slave raiding and piracy is wanting to have something to do with the West.

So does the Navy protect us from Muslims that want to enslave us or do they protect us at home? Japan and Hawaii were island kingdoms. Islane mentality thinks of the outside world as all the same. Japan wanted Asia for the asians. Now a stronger China wants the same. It’s get out but keep the money coming in. Neoconish?

Notice your jump from the Barbary wars to Hawaii and Japan?

Totally different subjects.

Japan refused to treat shipwrecked sailors humanely.

Hawaii welcomed the strange explorers with open arms (at first). Hawaii remained independent for over a hundred years. Japan is still independent, after the occupation form WWII, where they killed off tens of millions of Chinese.

Sounds like you are pushing some kind of weird isolationism/Buddhism, where the USA must take no action, lest their be a potential bad result.

Washington wanted to pay them off. John Adams was openly against Jefferson.

‘much of modern prosperity and society depend on enforcing international rules against preying upon shipping.’
Some people just don’t want to play. Cheap oil and cheap labor is the rope our enemies will use to hang us.

I haven’t gotten to the American Indians yet. There was plenty of land just east of Appalachia for everyone.

Very true. Strategic location for refueling. Did they have the right to cut off our trade with the rest of Asia?

Adams was a one-term President, while Jefferson's party went on to dominate American politics for the next 40 years. It doesn't seem like a policy of appeasing the Barbary States worked out very well politically for the Federalists.

So? non-sequiter

‘much of modern prosperity and society depend on enforcing international rules against preying upon shipping.’ Some people just don’t want to play.

Just stating an assumption does not make it true.

We don't need middle east oil any more.

President Trump showed we do not need Chinese labor.

The U.S. is better placed to be an isolated nation than most others, because it is large.

Allowing China to become the dominant power in the world will not end well for us.

They intend to replace us.

They view us as the enemy.

They are actively working to destroy us.

They are succeeding.

President Trump was actively fixing those problems.

I address the circumstance, why one of those you said didn’t want to have anything to do with the West when they really did, and you try to derive a general statement for SOP?

Historically merchants were the ones with ‘dusty feet’. Came and went and were treated rudely everywhere. Agrarian societies didn’t care for capitalists. Tables are now turned. They rule the world. Too many wars get started on their behalf.

Again, I corrected your characterization of the Muslim slavers.

They weren’t your agrarian anti capitalists. They were at the trailing end of generations of slave raiders, thieves, murderers and merchants in human flesh.

I agree with you 100%. They’re here now in the form of the doctor who shot up Fort Hood. Nipping it in the bud is not an option. They’re now in congress. Getting everyone on the same page is impossible. Think 1492 Spain. 1983 Augusto Pinochet. 1993 Mayor Giuliani.

Should we have taken out Russia and China when we had the chance post WW2? Too much to tackle at any given moment.
Mark Davis: “If anything on the level of another 911 occurs in this country 13 Arab capitols will be turned into glass!” Heard him say it but he’s just on the radio. y come to that at the rate we’re going.
