Killer whales attack fishing boat near Spain

At first, the crew "heard a strange noise and rushed to the top of the ship" thinking they may have hit a container

The yearlong aggression of orca pods against boats off the coast of Spain and Portugal continues unabated.

By October of last year, there were 33 bizarre "revenge" attacks by killer whales off the coast of Spain and Portugal and it seems they’re not done yet.

A video taken by fishermen in the Straights of Gibralter on April 3 shows the men valiantly fighting off a pod of the angry sea mammals as they attack the boat and break its rudder.

In a video published by The Daily Mail, the captain, Antonio Busse, 40, is seen fighting off the orcas with a pole while screaming at them to "piss off!" "Mamma Mia!" and "get off the (bleeping) boat!"

Other crew members are seen throwing items into the water to try and frighten away the angry pod of four, to no avail, and one large killer whale can be seen swimming underneath the boat — causing the crew to scream in fear. Another video shows the orcas threateningly circling the boat and breaching the surface nearby.

They are big and fast and smart and eat meat.

I would never be in the water with one and I wouldn’t be near them except in a frigate or larger.

That's a clever strategy for pods not to compete with one another while limiting the overall total population of apex predators. Probably produces a more stable equilibrium of the total number of orcas.

Wonder if the fishing boats mainly catch the fish these orcas eat?

Orcas are smart. They’ll hunt as a team. There are videos of them rocking a small ice floe to dislodge a seal sitting on the floe.

I think they’ve figured out these boats are taking their fish and they’re pissed.

That is an interesting question. I’d be curious too.

I’ve seen them playing Frisbee with seals!

They don’t eat people. They’re like dogs, without legs.

This pod apparently has taken to seeing small boats as toys.

You are correct. Here in the Pacific North West, the resident pods are all fish eaters (mainly salmon, of course) while the wandering/vagrant pods predate on pinnipeds (seals and the like).

With the salmon numbers appearing to drop, there is concern for the health and survival of the resident pods.

We’ll see. I’d like more transient whales anyway. I hate it when a seal steals the fish off my line.

I think they are upset because of this mask thing. Can’t blame them.

I was born in and grew up in SD.

There must have been an attractive female or two on the whale watching boat... submariners on those boats were a little bit different... let’s leave it at that. If the boat was on it’s way in and the tourist that was seen through the periscope cute enough, a sailor might be waiting on the dock that afternoon when the ship came back in. The sailor would be carrying the picture of the young lady they took through the scope...

I was informed that such tactics produced mission success with no casualties, both times deployed.

There it is.

These things are smart. If you saw a peculiar type of vehicle at your grocery store and started figuring out that the store gets empty when that vehicle is around, well, not a big deal if you have a full pantry, but you take note of it.

I’m sure the attitude changes if the cupboards are bare and these THINGS keep buying all the groceries before you even get to the store...

I wonder if seal bombs would drive them away?

In the US you'd probably be fined for harassing marine mammals.

Don’t know, the article goes with a video of a white shark, not a relative. The pic in post 1 is said to be of an attack in Spain. Looks to me like they’re letting their inner dolphin out rather than attacking. The article claims, and other articles, that there have been a number of attacks off Spain and Portugal, I’ve not read about them. Presuming they’re unsuccessful, and maybe they’re not really attacks, that’s understandable.

"Orcas are a really peculiar species with very finicky eating habits."

There is documented history in Australia of Killer Whales cooperating with local whalers to herd whales into a kill zone and even notify the whalers that they had prey located then lead them to the whales. After the kill the whalers would leave the whale overnight for the orcas who only feasted on the tongue.

This went on for decades on either side of the turn of the 19th century.
