Gen Xer here too. This stuff is a head scratcher to me. I’m fine with some tasteful tattoos of departed family or something meaningful, but the whole “art for art’s sake” tattoo movement leaves me with a lot of questions. I feel it’s more of the “look at me” attitude imbued with this generation.

I noticed the beginnings of the Tattoo craze in the Mid-2000's when everyone seemed to be getting them.

Low body image, feeling unloved and lonely, it might attract someone, transitoriness of life, being always in touch with the world they live in...i wonder what happens if tbe ink migrates to places like the blood brain border...or gets stuck in an atherosclerotic plaque, or binds up necessary enzymes...

It looks like a child’s art who is just learning to draw. And just scribbles all over the page with no form.

I managed to do an entire hitch in the USN, most of it in the pacific fleet and Vietnam. I carefully avoided getting a single tattoo. This is harder than you might think at that time period. I even had to push open a tiny window in a tattoo parlor bathroom in Hong Kong once, because some shipmates had pulled me in the parlor to force me to get a tattoo. (Yes we were all pretty drunk). I escaped and ran down the alley and went and hid out with a prostitute the rest of the night.
So I find it difficult to understand why so many people are willing to permanently deface their bodies the way they do. My daughter has them just about everywhere. It’s just so unreal. I just don’t get it. In a couple of decadesd they fade and spread out. Yuck.
Plus they are identifying marks making it too easy to identify you.
