An industrial radiography equipment, with a high risk to health if the radioactive source is extracted from its container, was violently stolen around 05:00 hours on the entrance road to the municipality of Teoloyucan, State of Mexico.
This Sunday, the National Commission for Nuclear Safety and Safeguards (CNSNS) reported to the National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) on the extraction.
For this reason, the CNPC issued an alert directed to the Civil Protection Units of the State of Mexico, Mexico City, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Michoacán, Guerrero, Morelos, Puebla and Tlaxcala.

Last time, back in 2013 (?) they lost Cobalt-60. Iridium-92 isn’t much of a risk, not much of it anyway.

This has happened before, with bad results. The item was melted down to scrap metal and made into table legs for restaraunts in the US. By absolute luck,an Illinois state trooper happened to have one of a few Geiger counters provided and found them; could have caused many injuries.

The alert notes that the industrial radiography unit contains 68.98 Curies of iridium-192.
If this radioactive Ir-192 source is removed from its shielding (which is then sold for scrap) the dose-equivalent rate to someone 2 feet away from the unshielded source is approximately 78 rem/hr. A person 0.5 feet away gets a dose-equivalent rate of over 1200 rem/hr. Radiation sickness can occur after an acute dose of around 100 rem. A lethal dose is approximately 600 rem, though it might take a week or so to painfully die.
