LONDON (AP) — Gig-economy Western “Nomadland” won four prizes including best picture on Sunday at the British Academy Film Awards, which were handed out during a pandemic-curbed ceremony that recognized a diverse array of screen talent.
“Nomadland” filmmaker Chloe Zhao became only the second woman, and the first woman of color, to win the BAFTA for best director, and star Frances McDormand was named best actress. “Nomadland” also took the cinematography prize.
“Nomadland” stars McDormand as a middle-aged woman who travels the American West while living out of her van and picking up short-term work.
Zhao, who lived among real American travelers for the film, thanked “the nomadic community who so generously welcomed us into their lives.”
“How we treat our elders says a lot about who we are as a society, and we need to do better,” she said.

The fact that Britain remains under coronavirus lockdown measures, with its movie theaters still closed, gave the evening a poignant tone, as did the death on Friday of Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, a long-time patron of the British film academy.
Prince William, who had been due to attend and make a speech in his role as president of Britain’s film academy, was absent following the death of his grandfather. The ceremony opened with a tribute to Philip, who was the academy’s first president in 1959.

I just watched it. It was a bad, sad movie.
It’s a good movie. Not the best ever made, but good.
Bad in what way?
Frances McDormand was great in Fargo, okay in 3 Billboards (it was a weak year for female actresses). A little loopy but at least nobody pays attention to Meryl Streep when she’s around.
“two”
Nomadland’ wins 4 BAFTAs
Movies should be nominated for BATF awards. Winners would have the most booze, guns, and explosions in them. lol
Michael Bay movies would be a lock to win every year then, LOL!
low camera quality, sad story, profoundly sad actually. No message of hope really, the message was that a difficult and sad existence awaited you in your old age. i think they tried for some uplifting message, but left you feeling alone and pretty hopeless. If you were a normal person you would be sad. If you were already sad you would cry and if you were already depressed you would think about killing yourself. Very powerful movie and not in a good way.
I can sum the movie up in 5 seconds, “Life sucks and then you die!”
I guess I’m too stupid to realize how stupid I am but what’s entertaining about Nomadland? What would attract anyone to an evening of boredom and sadness. I’m shallow, my concept of entertainment is that it must be entertaining. My winter grass in it’s spring growth spurt sounds more interesting.
Lol
I liked it so much I watched it twice. The wife? Not so much.
Suffering," said Balph Eubank. "Defeat and suffering."
But ... but why? People are happy ... sometimes ...aren't they?"
That is a delusion of those whose emotions are superficial."

Art is catching up with the book.
With each passing day, I hate hearing that more and more.
I hate that Rand and Orwell were so damned prescient.
I may join you soon.

Thanks for the review. Not a movie I want to see.
“Frances McDormand was named best actress.”
I could not love an actress more! She has been my favorite since, ‘Blood Simple’ and she NAILED it in ‘Fargo.’
I’m another that judges a movie on the PRODUCTION and the ENTERTAINMENT value for MY dollar and the ‘knock-it-out-of-the-park’ performances. I come from a long line of ‘Theater People.’ Ham it up I say, LOL!
Alec Baldwin? Total douche in Real Life. But he NAILED it in, ‘Glengarry Glen Ross.’ (As, amazingly, a total douche, LOL!)
These ‘Actors’ are trained monkeys, trained for MY amusement. When they deliver, fer Pete’s Sake, LET THEM! Give them ALL the accolades they deserve for a job well done.
