Guys back then were permanently messed up from shellshock, too.
The difference back then was government let em drink a lot and take it out on each other and family. Because government wasnt going to help them, other than to tell them to get over it. Now not so much.
As George Carlin said, "I’ll bet you if we’d have still been calling it 'shellshock', some of those Vietnam veterans might have gotten the attention they needed at the time."
My father came back from WWII with several problems, physical and otherwise.
He received a lot of help from the VA.
What was different back then was the VA; and the value that Americans had for returning servicemen.
