Headline photograph in Puerto Rico today. A policeman stands by a dying traffic accident victim.
PR is an, how should I say, interesting place to drive. During my six days on the island, I witnessed two deadly car accidents, one involving an 18-wheeler. Both in 50mph zones.
Beautiful island, though. Can’t wait to return.
I always say that Puerto Ricans are the friendliest people in the world until they get behind the wheel of a car.
That’s a great way to put it.
Oh, how I wish this were a wrong statement. My Puerto Rican Road Rage Gene almost got me whupped a few times shortly after going into active duty in 1993...
In other places of the country, there’d be monsters kicking the victim and stealing his wallet.
“Why do they hate these heroes?”
Because most of those heroes daily exhibit the commitment to others, personal integrity and humility that they themselves so sadly lack.
They can’t be like them so they hate them. Sadly not uncommon in the modern world.
