NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Survives First Frigid Martian Night on Its Own
SciTechDaily ^ | 06 April 2021

Making it through the frigid Martian temperatures after being deployed by NASA's Perseverance rover is a major milestone for the small rotorcraft...The sole mission of Ingenuity, a technology demonstration, is to conduct flight tests in the thin atmosphere of Mars; the helicopter carries no science instruments. "NASA’s last hurrah."

Pretty much, and American exceptionalism in science which thrives on achievement fueled by merit, not equity.

Mars can achieve a balmy 70° F at the equator in Summer, but nighttime temps can be as low as -100° F. Bring a sweater.

Everyone knows that a meritocracy is inherently racist and sexist. NASA will be defunded, and tasked to refocus on their primary mission, muslim outreach.

In a few years, NASA will have it’s hands full trying to set off bottle rockets.

-90C. Yikes! Flew H-60s in -30C temps on two continents. Lots of warm-up time. Having a Herman Nelson blowing warm air into the interior for 30 minutes prior to was money.
Regards the Mars helo, I’m sure Igor is smiling.

The massive James Webb telescope launches next year.

I think the total cost is close $10 billion.

I guess they’ve still got some stuff to clear off the books. With Dems in charge there will be no new $10B NASA projects! Master Xi would frown on that.

Meanwhile, have the reconstituted the Webb project team to include the proper diverse elements? Minimized or eliminated most white men?

What are the odds this thing will actually work with the Dem operated NASA?

Cameras don't count?

I watched a PBS program about the mission. At least half of the people featured were minorities/female. I have no problems with NASA hiring brilliant, dedicated people no matter what their ethnicity, but I seriously doubt the PBS program accurately depicted the mission’s staff.

Excitement might be best held until the critter actually flies - if it can.

I thought it carried a camera, too.

I read the article twice, looked closely at the photo, and I am still not sure the camera is there.

What? You don’t think the non-white-supremacist math of “2 + 2 = whatever you want” will get us back to Mars?

In America math is racist.

In space, there are no allowances for political correctness.

The helo has a six lithium-ion batteries (equivalent to a couple of cell phones) on board to keep it warm during the night! It won’t fly the next day until the batteries have charged up enough to power the flight and get through the next night. That restricts flying until late morning. As NASA and JPL get some experience, they will try flying earlier in the morning.

There will be one 90-second flight per Martian day with an average power consumption of ~350 Watts during the flight.

Re: Track mark

I think the helicopter was lowered from the underside of the rover, which then drove away.

I will guess the second track mark got chopped out of the left side of the photo.
