Welcome to Upstream Reviews! Posted on April 1, 2021 | by robkroese

For a while now, I’ve been frustrated with what you might call the mainstream institutions of publishing–particularly science fiction and fantasy publishing. The Hugo Awards have been a joke for years, WorldCon and most other science fiction conventions have been taken over by the pronoun people, and now Amazon is starting to ban books that don’t fit within their approved spectrum of political thought.

Many of the more conservative-leaning (or simply open-minded) people in this industry have been trying for some time to shine a spotlight on the petty authoritarianism, cronyism and intolerance that has permeated these institutions, to little effect. The problem is that you can’t save a ship whose crew is determined to scuttle it. The time has passed to save these institutions; it’s time to start building our own.

That’s what Upstream Reviews is about.

Don’t worry, we have no illusions that we are going to revolutionize publishing or replace Amazon. This site is simply one small contribution to what we hope will be a much larger effort to bring the wonder and joy back to science fiction and fantasy.

Part of what we are going to do with this site is to draw attention to some of the problems I mentioned above, and how they relate to both science fiction/fantasy publishing and the larger culture–in particular the trend toward banning books and censoring supposedly “dangerous” content, the phenomenon called “cancel culture,” and the growing illiberalism, intolerance and racism of the modern Left.

But mainly what we’re going to do is post reviews of books that we enjoy. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we’re going to recommend a book and tell you exactly what we like about it. We’re going to focus mainly on books by newer, lesser known authors, particularly authors whose work is “superversive,” meaning that it breaks from the current trend of cynicism, snark and bland progressivism and dares to be uplifting and a pleasure to read. Additionally, we will be working with authors on price promotions, so that you’ll often be able to get books for as little as $.99–or even free. If you want to be alerted when a book we recommend goes on sale, you can sign up for our promo alerts here.

We’ve got some great stuff lined up for you, so stay tuned. This is going to be fun.

Every time someone says “Build your own platforms!” you now have an answer. “STFU unless you’re going to do it.”

Because Robert Kroese and Declan Finn have

Going to republish my book, The Republic of Texas 2022. May rename it the Republic of MAGA. You can still get it on Amazon and making an audio version.

Two weeks ago, ClearCase_guy suggested “The Diamond Age” by Neal Stephenson, which I purchased and find interesting. Here are two quotes from its early pages:

He had some measure of the infuriating trait that causes a young man to be a nonconformist for its own sake and found that the surest way to shock most people, in those days, was to believe that some kinds of behavior were bad and others good, and that it was reasonable to live one's life accordingly.
and (speaking of the same person)...

[He] began to develop an opinion that was to shape his political views in later years, that while people were not genetically different, they were culturally as different as they could possibly be, and that some cultures were simply better than others. This was not a subjective value judgment, mearely an observation that some cultures thrived and expanded while others failed. It was a view implicitly shared by nearly everyone but, in those days, never noticed.

No, I’m not one of the contributors. Yes, I know some of the authors involved.

That book goes really retro - you get de facto replicators AND people living a Victorian lifestyle.

This is great and I sure hope it succeeds!

Been using goodreads, which is decreasing in utility bc no one dares "mention" in the reviews that this or that book contains material corrosive to our/FR values...

Also, I once went to one author's blog (of a series I was reading at the time) and immediately STOPPED the series bc of the ridonculous leftist content.
