Tesla Gigafactory UK Appears To Be In The Works [again,post-Brexit]

It might have already happened if it wasn't for Brexit.

Talks of a Tesla Gigafactory U.K. are back. The location would be in Somerset, England at a 635-acre smart campus called Gravity that’s currently under development.

Minister of State for Business, Energy, and Clean Growth Kwasi Kwarteng said the government is considering the site for a Tesla Gigafactory. The minister believes the Somerset location will be able to sustain a Tesla Gigafactory. Gravity is a good candidate because it’s one of the few locations in England large enough to house a factory of that size. Not only that, it’s located near the M5 and Junction 23 highways, a railway, and air and seaports are close by.

Rumors of a Tesla Giga U.K. started last summer when it became known that the UK government was seeking a 92-acre site to accommodate a Tesla Gigafactory. Gravity was one of the sites trying to secure that deal. Then rumors resurfaced last month when a letter addressed to Elon Musk was mailed to the Gravity location.

Now that Minister Kwarteng is pushing for Gravity to be the site, it seems Tesla Giga U.K. is not a rumor anymore. He also outlined the government’s pledge to support EV and battery manufacturing. Gravity wants to attract “world-leaders in advanced manufacturing, robotics, artificial intelligence and electric vehicles," he said.

Around 4:27 mark, some actual market share numbers are shown; over the new few years, Tesla's market share percentage will ramp as it adds factories (including battery production) and ramps production.

I know people in the renewables business (British Solar Renewables) — this would be a big boon for them. The UK has wind power from the North Sea and potential tidal and even solar power (with the newer solar panels). So this looks like a good place for Tesla. But let’s see what really happens

The suburban buildout in Britain over the past 40 years has been enormous, between the natural increase and the skedaddle from the big urban centers (in part due to “immigration” / deliberate anti-british population replacement), with a large modernization of roads and highways making commuting ever more practical.

Britain already had a national rail system, but roads reach many more of the nooks and crannies where people can and do move now.

The UK estimates for the number of gigafactories needed to meet British demand alone looks, well, nuts, but it’ll probably pan out.

The only problems with minorities are with the Muslims

In terms of the Gigafactory, you are right, the UK has great public transport. Electric cars will just make it better for the last leg - most likely they will be rental by the minute cars (quite a lot of them already operate)

[snip] The UK auto market saw plugin electric vehicles take 13.9% share of the auto market in March 2021, nearly double the 7.27% share of March 2020. Plugin volumes were up 112% year, against the backdrop of overall auto volumes growing 11.5%. Non-hybridized diesel combustion engines continued their steep decline, to just 10.8% share, from 17.6% a year ago, though quick-fix mild-hybrid diesels captured around half of that decline. [/snip]

NIO and Other Chinese EV Stocks Are Getting Crushed. Tesla’s Not Doing So Hot Either.

Shares of NIO, XPeng, and Li Auto fell dramatically in Wednesday trading, adding to recent investor pain. Electric vehicle stocks have been roiled by issues ranging from interest rate changes to microchip shortages. Today’s is due to a new reason.

So what’s hurting Chinese EV stocks? Li Auto seems responsible, catalyzing the drop by announcing plans for a $750 convertible bond offering in what amounts to a capital raise. Convertible bonds, as their name suggests, convert into common stock under certain conditions, and investors don’t like to see their existing stakes diluted with new stock. It’s the reason most capital raises tend to drive stock prices down for a while.

...It wasn’t a long or controversial tweet. Just one that thanked suppliers for getting Tesla critical parts. “This could be important,” Tesla investor Gary Black tells Barron’s.

Terrible robotic narration. The upshot is, electric vehicles have inherently fewer parts, and further reduction of parts leads to a manufacturing cost advantage, faster production, improvement in quality.
