Trump 'money bomb' scheme raised millions from unwitting donors – report (Barf)

Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign used pre-checked boxes and obscure design on fundraising emails to wring millions of dollars out of unwitting supporters, detonating a “money bomb” which allowed the Republican to compete against Joe Biden in the last months of the race.

The practice, pursued by the campaign and WinRed, a for-profit company, was detailed in an extensive report by the New York Times on Saturday. It is legal, but Ira Rheingold, executive director of the National Association of Consumer Advocates, told the paper it was “unfair, unethical and inappropriate”.

Another expert quoted by the Times said such “dark pattern” digital marketing “should be in textbooks of what you shouldn’t do” in politics.

The “money bomb” did not bring victory, as Trump lost the electoral college by 306 votes to 232. He also lost the popular vote by more than 7m ballots.

But, the Times said, “the recurring donations swelled Mr Trump’s treasury in September and October, just as his finances were deteriorating. He was then able to use tens of millions of dollars he raised after the election, under the guise of fighting his unfounded fraud claims, to help cover the refunds he owed.”

Every time you think the Guardian and the NY Slimes could not get more idiotic and biased, they prove you wrong.

They gotta keep up the lefty narrative that Trump is a cheat and a swindler in the event he makes a 2024 run.

End of discussion.

There is actually some truth in that article.

The redwin site was indeed a little deceptive and annoying. I had a $10 donation repeat on me, when I didn’t intend it to.

And you had to click through a bunch of screens trying to get you to double your donation, and sign up for recurring donations. It was confusing.

I don’t have any regrets for donating to Trump, regardless of how he uses the money. He fought for us. He did a heck of a job.

But I don’t like winred’s tactics.

It was heavy handed, but I don’t think it was designed by Trump.

And when I went to donate to the Georgia candidates, if you read the fine print, 1/3 of it was going to McConnell. But it allowed you to change it, which I did.

They got two unapproved $50 donations from me before I got it stopped. It wasn’t proper. I don’t blame Trump.

I am still not sure what was “wrong” about “money bombs.”

Was it that the default was to send weekly or monthly?

At worst, the campaign was annoying. Speaking of filling my email spam folder in addition to unauthorized use of the phone I pay for for marketing purposes, why doesn’t Fed.gov instead chase down and skin alive telemarketers, especially that Kevin guy from Bangalore.

"The “money bomb” did not bring victory, as Trump lost the electoral college by 306 votes to 232. (He also lost the popular vote by more than 7m ballots.) That is just not so...Donald Trump possibly won in a historic landslide.....The John Roberts Court refuses to hear the evidence.

I wonder if there were even any complaints against Redwin or Trump. They speak of unwitting contributors, as if Harpo Marx was picking someone’s pocket, and that his entire contest of the election was in order to not refund those “unwitting” contributions. How many of those are they alleging was “unwitting”? In dollar terms.

It’s winred. They suck. I gave money to Pres Trump and of course the first time I did I was unaware of the pre-checked box because I didn’t look. My fault btw. So...when I got the email confirmation for a ‘repeat’ contribution, I contacted them immediately and had it canceled. They didn’t get any extra money but it wasn’t not for the lack of trying.
