If You Ever Hear This 4-Word Phrase When You Pick Up the Phone, Hang Up Immediately
Readers Digest ^ | Nov. 4, 2020 | Sam Benson Smith

Few people still pick up phone calls from unknown numbers, but if you do you need to listen closely to what the person on the other end says. If you receive a call and immediately hear the phrase “Can you hear me?,” hang up. The phrase is used to coax you into saying “yes,” a word that, if said in your voice, is as good as gold for con artists.

Total comedy gold, some of them. For lulz, look up Kitboga and Wenja 92. 36th degree black belt trolling.

I use Robokiller on my cell phone. Blocks 99% of that garbage. Every now and then, I turn it off so I can mess with them. I'll let it go for 10-15 minutes and then ask them if their mother is still feeding them with her left hand. Flips them right out.

Or if they’ve done something other than random dialing, “Is this (your name)” fishing for a yes.

Most appropriate answer is “Who is this?” but “Speaking” also works.

A verbal yes on the phone, recorded and manipulated or not, is legally meaningless. Now, if you give them credit card information or send a check....

> I just say “No, I can not hear you” over and over until they get tired and go away. <

LOL. But as for me, I’m usually more polite. I will wish them “Good day”, then try to engage them in friendly conversation. I will ask them questions when appropriate. And everything I say will be in Hungarian.

But I do fear the day when I’m called by a Hungarian scammer. Because I have no backup plan for that.

I’ve heard this warning before.

They record your voice and then somehow use it to agree to stuff that you never agreed to.

It’s to rob you electronically.
= = =

I heard they want to access your medical or medicare for their benefit. You may not find out, as opposed to credit card usage.

If they’re using your SocSec number and getting Medicare, wouldn’t the billings/payments show up on your monthly statements?

We get them at our office here and it is usually getting a discount rate on credit card interest. On one occasion, I played along just to see what they would do and I gave them a name “Bob Jones” (not my real one, of course) and the person at the end said “F$%k you Bob Jones” and hung up. A couple of days later, the same scam called me again and I used the same name and then he asked for my credit card number, so I gave 123 456 789 and then they hung up.

I’ve had scam calls asking for someone for example, named Erica.
When I say there’s no one here by that name, they then go on to say, “Well, maybe you can help me” and then go on with the scam looking for money.

I have my phone set to different ringtones for my favorites, my general contact list and my default ringtone for everything else.

I can tell just by the ring how badly I may want to answer my phone.

My favorites are family and a few very close friends. I will take the time to answer for them.

Everything else can wait.

Apple i phone setting:

“Silence Unknown Callers” For me it’s ON

Routes any calls not in your contacts list to your voicemail. If they want to leave a message fine, else finer.
