Seventy-four years ago, in 1947, the Brooklyn Dodgers signed Major League Baseball’s first African American player in the modern era: Jackie Roosevelt Robinson. This historic moment is celebrated as the formal “integration” of Major League Baseball (MLB). For three decades after Robinson broke the “color line,” there was a steady increase in American-born Black players taking the field. But this year, on opening day, 2021, just 7% of players on MLB rosters are American-born Black athletes.
What has happened to the Black American baseball player?

Why are there so many non American baseball players? Many of them don’t speak a lick of English. What, there were no Americans that were as good in the sport?

Kids with no fathers tend to be poorer and will tend toward other games.
Because they’re all in the NBA and the NFL? How come we don’t see stories about why there are so few white people in those leagues?
Baseball is practically skydiving compared to the one hour of play, four hours of commercial breaks snoozefest that is the NFL.
They were not friends until deep into their rivalry. They HATED each other until they shot that commercial in French Lick.
Higher percentage of blacks in MLB than they are as a percent of the US population, therefore they are over performance ng based on current demographics.
Because unlike basketball, baseball usually takes long years in the minors trying to make it, grinding to actually succeed? Hard work?
There are fields but they are vacant. Inner city kids are playing basketball instead.
Growing up, myself and my buddies played sandlot baseball every day in the summer from morning to evening. Today you never see a group of kids playing ball, everything now is organized. From little league to travel teams and Federation ball.
Travel teams are ridiculous, the parents are forced to attend every weekend tournament wherever the team manager wants to play and that is expensive. It's a parental commitment they have to adhere to if they want their kid to play and it's common for the parents to switch their kid to another team the following season with the promise of a better coach.
A friend on my senior softball team used to coach kids baseball with the intent of keeping the team together as they advanced thru the different age groups. He gave up because each year the better kids would be poached by other teams that promised that better coach.
That's why you don't see any blacks on the Canadian or US ski teams....Skiing is horribly expensive.
Not to mention curling.
