Note here the picture of Secretary of State Seward cutting corners, skipping over normal channels and stepping wildly outside his own authority to direct actions toward Fort Pickens.

In previous posts our own DiogenesLamp has expressed some admiration for Secretary Seward, saying he, not Lincoln, should rightly have been nominated by Republicans in Chicago, and that Seward, not Lincoln, was more likely to have prevented Civil War.

But as of March 31, 1861 Seward is actively working to defend the Union and will soon describe Lincoln as "the best of us".

That "irrepressible conflict" Seward predicted in 1858 is "now" only days away...
