WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Earlier today, the South Dakota House of Representatives by an overwhelming vote of 67 -- 2 soundly rejected Governor Noem's "style and form" veto of HB 1217, the Fairness in Women's Sports Act. Governor Noem quickly responded today by again refusing to sign HB 1217, effectively killing the bill. Despite Governor Noem's veto of this bill and refusal to take a strong stand for women's sports, the House's nearly unanimous vote is a strong rebuke of the NCAA and the tentacles of Big Business that pressured Governor Noem to retreat from her earlier support of the bill in the first place.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said:
"The South Dakota House of Representatives today soundly rejected Governor Noem's 'style and form' veto of the Fairness in Women's Sports Act. Governor Noem had another opportunity to sign this bill and stand with the citizens of South Dakota and the legislature. Instead she failed to listen to South Dakotans and is siding with big business, the NCAA, and the rest of the woke mob on the Left.
"Far from standing alone as Governor Noem has suggested, signing HB 1217 would have put South Dakota in the company of Idaho, Mississippi, and Arkansas, which have already enacted similar bills into law, with other states poised to follow.
"Despite Governor Noem's refusal to stand up for common sense, Family Research Council will continue to support efforts in other states pushing back against destructive gender ideologies that threaten our young people, our families, and our freedom," concluded Perkins.
“YOU do not have all the facts, but YOU have a strong opinion.”
Right back at ya.

There is an element of Title IX schadenfreude here, isn’t there?
link t post # 42 ... bsckatcha, m’Lady.
You think that would be happy about this and cheering her as a hero.
No they’re just using it to smear her with conservatives.
She didn’t sign onto the bill because it was technically written very poorly and would have been overturned by the courts.
The left would have said “aha the opposite must be constitutional”. That’s how they got gay marriage.
I call it “repeal to a third position”, and that’s how liberals get laws by judicial fiat that would not have been supported by voters.
This country is on borrowed time.
Any true Christian can see the writing on the wall.
But then, we conservatives are kinda used to that, aren't we?
“I thought she was going to present her own version of this bill. I didn’t read that she did so.”
She basically did. Her form of the bill would not have opened up the state to lawsuits or retaliatory measures.
...of course that means that the Left and the Special Interests would support her version, which means it was toothless and did nothing to stop cross-dressers from competing in girls’ sports.
“Are you aware of what the leftists did to North Carolina when that legislature tried to put in place a similar block to these degenerate freaks?”
Well then, we better not say a peep in opposition to leftists.
Let’s keep silent until we get our muscles stronger and in a couple of decades we will come storming back.
See comment 34.

You can read Kristie's initial rejection of the bill HERE
If you read it you will find this fine little nugget:
"A team or sport designated as being female is available only to participants who are female, based on their biological sex, as reflected on the birth certificate or affidavit provided upon initial enrollment in accordance with § 13-27-3.1."
Yeah, and affidavit shall determine their sex. That will certainly end the problem! /sarcasm
This is the twenty-first century. Surely we have tests to determine exactly what their sex is. These kids are being drug tested anyway in the name of the War On (some) Drugs. Surely we can determine in an actual, scientific manner whether or not the child in question is XX or XY. Perhaps there should be some legislative way to deal with that vanishingly small percentage of the population that is XXY. Beyond that, nothing more is really needed.
Bottom line is that she absolutely caved to the trans/queer deviants. To say anything else is sophistry.
Welcone to the Nikki Haley Losers' club. This week's topic: "I coulda been a contender …"
She sure has a number of very vocal apologists here doesn't she?
Note in the above comments that the conservative objections to her is based on what she just vetoed (a bill to protect women’s sports), while the people supporting her feel the need to attack their opposition on a personal level. Similar to when she called the bill’s supporters ‘a conservative cancel-culture’. No thanks, one McCain per lifetime is enough for me.
Bottom line is that many of us now better understand her. For some here, her avoiding lawsuits means the state can get by with a few less lawyers on staff...for others, we understand that ANY law which is effective, and which our side likes will have to be fought out in court - with the Georgia voting reform law being latest...but even there, the RINO still signed it. This one ran.
I’m still pondering why the possibility of a few corporate boycotts would concern her enough to make a Faustian Deal?
Is South Dakota in deep trouble financially?
The pandemic closed a heap of businesses all over, and on top of that Uncle Joe has stopped work on the Keystone Pipeline. Could THIS have been the proverbial straw that broke the conservative Camel’s back? If so, I wish Gov. Kristi would just say so. She can be very articulate. That would add a smidgen of logic to what she’s now doing, not that I approve of the tactic.
These anti-Noem attacks are from the same people who hated Trump.
They are afraid of her.
Dig deep and you will find the links to Jeb Bush, RINOs, never-Trumpers, Soros. They want the Republican Party control returned to them so they can reach across the aisle to their democrat buddies.
Don’t fall for it.
Saying it in my most wimpy, low-testosterone voice, "We need to elect more Republicans, and the liberal media isn't letting us get our message out."
“These anti-Noem attacks are from the same people who hated Trump.”
Prove it.
As an agitprop, I seriously doubt you intended to vote for Kristi anyway. Take your stealth defeatism elsewhere and your ‘family council’ with you.
The “family council” you breezily dismiss has taken bullets for the conservative cause.
This should have been a win. The battle was won. The bill was on Noem’s desk. Don’t be a Stockholm Syndrome conservative and excuse Noem’s support for the progressive agenda. She has earned in spades every bit of the criticism she has gotten.
