Saw the movie about 35 years ago when it was already an oldie. I’ve never read the book. I think “Cybill Shepherd” when I hear Last Picture Show. Whew. Quite nice.

My grandma always said to say something good about the dead.
This pervert is dead. Good.

Sounds good to me.

He didn’t write Brokeback Mountain. It wrote the screenplay from a short story written by a leftist female writer.

I don’t think I ever really did get that one, or at least I never thought it was one of McMurtry’s best. I’ve only read it once, though, so perhaps I’ll give it another go.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I think I’ll read it again before too long.

Ben Johnson - (1918 - 1996)
His most famous role came in 1971 in Peter Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Show as Sam the Lion from the novel by Larry McMurtry. He won The Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

I know that - but that’s even less reason to use Brokeback in the headline.

Elmore Leonard’s westerns, not as well known as his crime novels, are more like demystification.

Headline writers assume their lib readers know BBM and not Lonesome Dove or his other works. Plus, the have to celebrate perversity...

Larry McMurtry was a talented writer. Forget Broke back Mountain. It was one story.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

A guy who spent a career writing westerners was "best known for his anti-Western work"... huh? That's like saying Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen are "best known for their anti-New York works".

Well, I guess it would make sense only in the context that the "Brokeback" cowboys have now become negative slang whenever a genre starts pushing the gay narrative (e.g. "The Sopranos season 6 turned into Brokeback mafia"), so that could "anti-western" in the sense its an insult to westerns!

This guy wrote "Hud" too. And "The Last Picture Show" sounds interesting, but its the only thing on his writing credits list that actually IS a "non-western" (like how Sergio Leone's only non-western was the excellent Once Upon a Time In America)

My dad was a fan of the Lonesome Dove series, had the original miniseries and all the prequels and sequels on DVD. I still have his old collection, I've never seen it, have no interest in it.

Weird that this guy was the same screenwriter who gave us the homo cowboys. But hey, I went into American Gods thinking "hey, it's the guy who wrote Coraline, this should be cute and creepy!" BIG mistake...

>> Has anyone ever written an anti-Eastern <<

Yes, just about every story set in flyover country that has characters sneering about "city folk back east" is an anti-Eastern. (To be fair, I am pretty anti-east coast elite myself) FReepers write anti-Easterns all the time, though anti-Northerns are more common.

This guy won an Oscar for "Best Screenplay" for the gay cowboy movie. IMO, that will always taint his other work. I still might check out The Last Picture Show, but its "from the writer brought you gay cowboys..." will always be in the back of my mind.

I have seen some of director Ang Lee's other films, and IMO, that guy is way overrated and seems to buy into his own hype about how "artsy" his movies are. His most recent movie was the godawful Gemini Man with Will Smith (a rehash of films like The Sixth Day and Looper)

Even the adorably plump-lipped Emily Browning couldn’t save the bizarre “American Gods.”

That was Boy George? Well that explains a few things.

And he’s also a good example of how crazy the world is lately. I remember seeing sometime last year how Boy George got in trouble for saying the trans movement was getting obnoxious or something.

Never thought id see a world where he was in trouble for being old fashioned.
