‘These are people’: Protesters gather at Echo Park Lake to stop clearing of homeless encampment

The number of tents at the park has swelled in recent months...Near the intersection of Glendale Boulevard and Park Avenue, at one corner of the park, a crowd of people was gathering around 7 a.m. Wednesday to stop officials from forcing homeless individuals out.

O’Farrell has said he plans to close the park but did not say when, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday. A source with direct knowledge of the process told the newspaper the city plans to fence off the park and clear it of the homeless encampment on Thursday.

However, the Times reported the source spoke on the condition of anonymity since plans for the park closure are being “tightly held” as they could inspire protests like those Wednesday.

News of the expected closure has spurred local activists into action. Outreach workers have been working to get some of the encampment’s residents into hotels, and on Wednesday, crowds gathered at the park in protest.

Meanwhile, some local residents and others have been vocal critics of the encampment. An online petition on Change.org titled “Save Echo Park Lake” places blame on O’Farrell and Mayor Eric Garcetti for the growing number of tents pitched along the perimeter of the lake.

The petition, which has 4,724 signatures of a 5,000 goal, describes the park as “virtually unusable” and states it is “becoming Skid Row.”

I know this “concerned woman” has turned her stimulus checks over to the homeless.

And those who just want to enjoy a nice day at one of the metro area’s largest parks? They’re not people? Go play around in the traffic, kids!

OK, protesters, don't just throw them done spare change for food booze, smokes and/or crack. Why don't y'all each take one or two of them in your own home and show us how it's done? Be those "change agents", set an example.

“What the heck does the guy’s skin color have to do with anything?”

EXACTLY! Everything is racist now. Haven’t you noticed? The other day a politician called fossil fuels racist. Really. Not kidding.

Oh, and we’ve moved from blacks being the focus to Asians. I guess the fashion has changed.

Amazing how if they actually dealt with these “people”, these hippies might actually likewise want to chuck them out.

There’s no mention of racism anywhere in the article.

My FRiend, what you are saying makes no sense.

Democrats/Leftists get away with this thinking — this type of behavior — because they know no one will stop them ... not just because “good intentions” based on emotion cannot be countered effectively, if at all, by reason and logic, but because — and Democrats/Leftists damn-well know this — so very many on the Right fear the Left even more than they fear God (which, from a practical perspective, is not without good reason.)

Re: The hypocritical "concerned woman" who won't dare use her stimulus check for the homeless nor invite them to camp out in her yard or apartment complex too.

That's the issue in nutshell. The hypocrite will change her tune in an instant if she gets the bill for these homeless and/or gets the court order forcing her to allow them to move in with her. There are millions of delusional, immature, self-centered, mentally deficient people out there determined to force their will on others.

“ It’s interesting how the China Virus just skipped over the homeless camps.”

Why yes, it is. It’s almost like the numbers have been exaggerated or something, isn’t it?

This is what happens to “public property” in a society without character and virtue.

If we want nice things like decent public places, we will have to _earn_ them.

“My FRiend, what you are saying makes no sense.”

It’s not a response to the article. I mention this because I have read so many references to racism in the last few days (weeks, actually) that it seems an inescapable component of everything. Sorry, I am just frustrated and annoyed. Sorry to bother you. Have a great, racism free day.

The government — at all levels and in most situations — has corrupted the meaning of the term “public property” into “state-owned property.” That is, even the “state” understands that, as with private property, some type of ownership — implying responsibility — is necessary to protect and control its use. However, under socialism (which, with the acquiesence if not outright encouragement of a frightened, formerly-free populace America is devolving into), the government thinks and operates under the presumption that that responsibility is better carried out by government rather than by individuals (i.e., private owners).
