University of Tennessee-Knoxville administrators are staying silent on the status of a lecturer who took two weeks away from the school in February after writing a phrase used by rapper Tupac Shakur on a whiteboard.

In early February, Melissa Hargrove, a lecturer on race and anthropology in the Africana Studies department, wrote the acronym for “Never Ignorant Getting Goals Accomplished,” a quote used by the hip-hop artist, on a whiteboard during class.

Why is Tupac "traumatizing"? A revolution eats its own moment.

Good thing she didn’t add the acronym PREASE behind it, or she would have really pissed off the black/Chinese biracial students

In college I was required to take a 'multicultural' class. I chose what was then called Black Studies, now it's called Africana Studies.

The professor was a lady from Nigeria. She was the only black person in the room.

That actually sounds as though it might have been worthwhile!

The professor made an enforced error. He/She/It should have known better than to bait the students in that manner.
There were other ways to get the point across.

Yes. The students are being over sensitive about a word they hear day in, day out from their so called Rap ‘music’, but that’s just how things are. Didn’t expect their teacher to get down and dirty in the classroom.

It was. We read several books and wrote a couple of papers. I introduced her to Joe Henderson's album 'In Pursuit Of Blackness'.

Born and raised in Georgia, I figured I had a little advantage in knowledge of black people.

How can a subject be studied if certain words which are relevant to the subject under study are banned? It’s absurd.

Clown World imploding? African studies is clownish. Tupac in a college classroom is clownish. The students claiming to have been traumatized are clownish. I’d say that I hope it all falls apart, but I don’t think my hopes matter, and darned if I can tell what’s keeping it together at this point anyway.

In this case, despite the course title, I believe Africana is to be praised and admired rather than studied.

Clownish

Well, clowns paint their faces. Kind of like Black Face.

But, they seem to like White as background. White Supremacy.
