Horowitz: Gov. Noem’s retreat on South Dakota transgender bill shows the need to make red states red again

Every statewide partisan officeholder in South Dakota is a Republican. The GOP controls the state House 62-8 and the Senate 32-3 — the largest majorities ever. Yet they can't seem to ban castration of minors or prevent men in female sports as part of the loony transgender agenda. What gives? They are plagued by the same business lobby preventing every other GOP supermajority state from protecting its historic cultural conservatism.

If we can't get solid legislation enacted in South Dakota because of spineless Republican pols, where can we?

Shallow analysis.
The legislation was poorly written and would have allowed the NCAA to penalize S.D.
Gov. Noem clearly explained to Tucker last night, what was wrong with the bill and how it would NOT have had the intended effect.

Seemed like her explanation was pretty clear as to why she sent it back for revision. But that could just be my understanding. Other understandings may vary from individual to individual.

ScubaDiver :" They are plagued by the same business lobby preventing every other GOP supermajority state from protecting its historic cultural conservatism."
Exactly, the dollar investment by business looking to keep cheap labor.
Many active Conservatives have been bought-off by threats of losing re-election funds.
Only the newly elected have any spine .

Fake news - she wants the bill rewritten so it will withstand legal challenges. I watched her entire interview last night and she has been mischaracterized.

I like Noem’s looks; she’s a knockout. But she’s toast IMO as presidential/VP contender for 2024. We need a fighter who doesn’t flinch in the face of pressure from the woke/corporate/media mob. And Noem has proven that she’s not the warrior we’re looking for.
To: rktman
She doesn’t want go national just yet so this is the easy way out. She’ll sign it once it’s ‘revised’, meaning she can have it both ways on the way to 8 years in the statehouse. Like all voters we’re being played.

No one is listening to her reasoning.

Yes, Tucker was wed to his “caved to the NCAA” narrative and wasn’t prepared to LISTEN to her more detailed explanation.

I’ll admit to being a little befuddled by the explanation here by South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem. The SD legislature passed a bill to protect women’s sports by banning biological males from participating in biological women’s sports. The bill has overwhelming support in South Dakota; however, Govenor Kristi Noem doesn’t support it.
When asked why she doesn’t support it, Noem seems to say she has received advice and counsel that the law would fail if challenged in federal court. Specifically Noem implies the NCAA would sue South Dakota and she believes the state would lose a lawsuit based on the law. If that is her position, essentially she is attempting to avoid litigation, proactively planning to lose that litigation, on a law supported by the majority in her state. WATCH:
What is your take?

“No one is listening to her reasoning.”
Well, she did have two weeks to work on her lies to justify vetoing the bill, so it sounds like she got a lot of help in that area.
But the bottom line remains: The Final Four, among other Special Interests, told her they opposed it, and she CAVED - pretty black-and-white to most conservatives here.

Something tells me there are a whole bunch of Reeking Rino’s among that GOP count.
Will the RINO’s have the backbone to override Noem with a super-majority vote?

HELLO! IT WASN’T “solid legislation”. It was really messed up. Let Kristi be Kristi! Stop believing what the media telly you to believe.

That’s probably it, she simply doesn’t want to go into the fight for the Republican nomination in 2024, and given this veto, now she can claim that she’s just not up to it. I don’t know the ages of her kids, but I’m thinking that was a big factor.

You only made it by 14 seconds.
Noem has not been having any good news from the conservative media.
The only conservative site giving Noem somewhat of a pass is John Solomon’s Just the News.

There's nothing 'wrong' with the bill. It's a bill that is virtually identical - damn near verbatim - to a number of other bills passed by other GOP states.
Exactly what could be added to the bill that would prohibit the NCAA from 'punishing' S.D. (nothing, is the answer. The NCAA is going to do what it wants to do).
Republican politicians have to have the courage to back up their rhetoric. Too many, don't. It's that simple.

Not happening. I read an analysis of this bill and the Special Interests were sure they had to bottled up in the State Senate. But it got out through a rarely used process 18-17. She then immediately said she supported it, and that was because she hadn’t been lobbied yet by the Special Interests. But then they those Special Interests took over and had her implode on the issue. It’s so damn easy for them!!!
