Sensors and satellites across the globe have picked up signals that cannot be explained and many of these phenomena have been kept from the public. Ratcliffe [Director of National Intelligence under Trump] claimed intelligence agencies have quieted the information, hoping to publicize the sightings when there are proper explanations that are accessible and understandable to the public.

Responding to Trump's interest in space intelligence, former Israeli space security chief Haim Eshed explained in an interview with Yediot Aharonot late last year that the US and Israel have both been dealing with aliens for years.
Eshed insisted that Trump is aware of extraterrestrial life and that he was "on the verge" of disclosing its existence. However, the alien "Galactic Federation" reportedly stopped him from doing so, saying they wished to prevent mass hysteria since they felt humanity needed to "evolve and reach a stage where we will... understand what space and spaceships are," Yediot reported.

It has been quite a while since I read the novel, but Clarke, as an atheist, depicted the Overlords as having the appearance of demons.. They oversaw the destruction of humanity and the Earth itself, as human children became part of a disembodied hive mind. This was a horror story to me.

That might very well be “The Lie” that they exchange for the truth.
When the “Virgin Mary” suddenly appears with the Pope and some Imam to join in some public show of world solidarity, it will seal beginning of the final economic, political, and religious tyrannical regime.
The remaining 95% of the population will need some sort of explanation to calm the fear. What better way to do it than through a fake religious trio made in hell?
