Nah. Her staff should be sending over deliveries of food to her and the cops ordered to hold her and all the other inmates in her holding cell, three times a day. "Delicious, mouth-watering food that the cops and inmates fall in love with. The fill-in manager and staff should get arrested, too, and join along, and others should take their place. When you're down to just customers, have one of them pass out pickles or dinner rolls to the others, ‘til he or she gets arrested. They should start singing patriotic songs and Negro spirituals. Satyagraha can be fun, when done in the company of friends."

Interesting idea, but it would require police to let the food in and restaurant staff with courage and the willingness to be locked up, too since the restaurant has been ordered closed.

In this passage there’s only one punctuation mistake, though, and one erroneous placement of a word. That’s pretty good for the time this was published.

Her philosophy was sound for business and government, if a tiny bit extreme. It’s when people started applying it to personal relationships that it went astray. She, or her followers, just went too far with it.

I once heard someone who knew her speak at a meeting. She told this little anecdote that I don’t think is recorded elsewhere: She said Ayn had just bought an article of clothing that was on sale, and said something like “I got it at a much better price.”

Then she corrected herself and said something like, “No. That WAS the price.”

The only thing she’s got right is that the left sucks the big one. The Atheism is an issue, but she even got that wrong. Does anyone seriously believe that G-d is a heavenly bureaucrat you’re petitioning for special favors(her words)? That deity really does NOT exist. Any chance that He’s an industrialist, who would like the beneficiaries of His bounty to pay the requested consideration for it; i.e., prayer, charitable works, a little humility, etc.? She believes that mankind is the ultimate creation, capable of approaching godhood (her words again), but doesn’t know much about human nature or theology. Her description of Dagny Taggert and John Galt getting it on in a railroad tunnel makes me wonder if she’s even female. Definitely not godlike.

Egotism is not a virtue. It’s unavoidable. But it does get in the way of genuine accomplishments of the sort that fictional Rearden or Taggert supposedly have. Nothing is more egotistical than “from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”. It’s a license to be a leech. Wanting to improve on the world as you find it is not egotism. It’s why Jews and Moslems both circumcise their sons as a covenant with G-d, a commitment to make the world into a home for G-dliness, to bring it closer to what it could be and should be. You can’t do that unless you get over yourself.

I agree with you I don’t like Rand’s atheism but her philosophy is right on the mark. You don’t need to read the book. Just read Natemans passage from Atlas and you will see that she is right.

It was ordered closed long ago. The police can refuse the food, and continue to subsist on stale donuts and bad coffee, while guarding the holding center from demonstrators who are offering them delicious food. Cops, of course, are known for their self-denial while fulfilling the orders of a tyrannical bitch./s

I’m taking my model from the civil rights movement. It didn’t take courage to go to jail back then. It became a spirit-lifting enjoyable gathering, and the sterile environment echoes with the sound of hymns. Now they can relive that. Instead of “freedom riders” they can all be freedom diners. It can’t fail. Distinguished chefs can volunteer to come in from around the world in order to freedom dine and spend a day in jail. It can be done in all the lockdown states.

I read all of Anthem, We The Living, and Atlas Shrugged. Finally, in the middle of The Fountainhead, I had had enough and put it down forever. Laisez Faire Capitalism is not “her” philosophy. She is a champion of it, but Milton Fried, Rush Limbaugh and Wm. F. Buckley are better champions by far. And it is good on paper, but you do need to hybridize it somewhat. All by itself it lacks key ingredients that are required by Judaeo-Christian ethics, and would quickly resemble a Dickens novel, or the small-minded demands of Shylocke that a contract be fulfilled to the letter, up to and including a pound of human flesh.

Balancing that hybridization while avoiding the abyss of socialism is not only ethical, but a matter of survival for an enlightened industrial society. Pollution is bad, but does not justify the insanity of environ-mental-ists shutting down all fossil fuels or outlawing plastic straws. Starving people cannot work productively or buy enough to be called consumers. But that does not justify giving corrupt unionists a strangle-hold on all industry. It’s in the interests of employers to pay their workers enough so that they can buy the products they make, such as cars and houses, and still have enough to eat. Collective bargaining might or might not be a part of arriving at the right wage for each industry, depending on the situation. It might kill off employment, too.

Ayn Rand believed in the triumph of reason, but that’s hardly “her” philosophy, either. Ancient Greeks and medieval Talmudic scholars had similar beliefs.

Go back and revisit any discussion on libertarianism or candidates with libertarian leanings.

Don't have the time. Maybe you can direct some of them to me........Thanks though

Civil rights movement also started with one recalcitrant middle-aged woman refusing to obey ridiculous orders.

Dated a young lady once who was a dedicated Randian; she had me read ‘Atlas’, which I did, cover to cover. As talented as Rand was at identifying the absurdities of the left, that’s how clueless she was in understanding healthy personal interactions of actual human beings.

In particular, the absence of children in a book the size and scope of “Atlas Shrugged” was especially striking to me. (Granted, the book does begin with Dagney and some others as children, but they’re not really children - if you read their dialogue, they’re apparently small underage humans with the maturity of adults who just haven’t yet crossed some legal treshold of adulthood. And there’s a small mention of kids in the segment on the hidden-away homestead of a group of freedom-loving dissenters. That’s it).

And that absence of children is hardly surprising - as wonderful as they can be in one’s life, they are the ultimate challenge to “the virtue of selfishness”. If you’re going to raise good kids, you pretty much have to buy into something akin to altruism - a whole lot of giving, and no guarantee of any reciprocal behavior in return. I don’t think Rand had a clue what healthy family life would require, and as such, she at least had enough sense not to try to fake it in her written work (or in her actual personal life, for that matter).

Astute observation. She does mention a child in her endless John Galt speech, about a mother who prefers to feed her child rather than get a new hairdo, because she values the child more than a hairdo, as opposed to viewing it as a sacrifice. But that’s about it. Oh, yeah. Evil leftists were threatening to start killing children if John Galt didn’t agree to lead everyone. It’s beginning to sound a lot like modern-day leftards pressuring Trump to do a sales pitch for the vaccines that the leftards were unable to sell themselves, after saying during the campaign that they’d have to suck because Trump is behind them. But that’s under “leftards suck,” not “children are our future,” which, as we both agree, Ayn Rand was great at illustrating.

You get kudos for thinking outside the box. Need some high profile support, but it beats just being ground further and further into the mud with Marxist authoritarianism.

One man who could give something like this high-profile support just died. Trump is the other, but how does one approach him at this time? This is his sort of idea, alright.

We have to start grinding them back, putting them on the defensive. And Biden, their figurehead, is such a profile in mediocrity that he’s an ideal target. Whitmer would be an ideal Bull Connor, too, the murdering evil bitch.

You have to read an Ayn Rand’s biography. There are several. (Note I do question some of their accuracy !) She came from an upper middle class Russian Jewish family. So she was shaped by that experience probably lots of antisemitism directed at her by Russian orthodox Christians. That probably colored her views on Christianity. Then she survived the cataclysmic Bolshevik Revolution, Leninist (maybe early Stalinist!) Russia all before coming to the US. It’s amazing she survived and learned the lessons she learned. Yes she has warts, maybe they are more psychological calluses then warts. She does have some important things to say.

“We the Living” is often claimed to be the nearest thing to her autobiography. It’s a claim I take with a grain of salt. Still its a worthwhile book.

She gets face time on Tucker Carlson and makes an impassioned plea to resist communism and for freedom. Then she gets arrested, sentenced to 93 days in jail or 35,000 bucks.

==

She got sent to the Gulag.

You’re right....this cannot be allowed to stand.
