As Europe struggles with a "third wave" of COVID infections that's forcing more governments to reimpose at least some lockdown measures, the US is finding that the number of newly confirmed cases is climbing again, with some of the biggest week-over-week increases seen in states that had been praised for their vaccination diligence.

The US is adding roughly 55K new cases per day, a level that it has plateaued over the past months (though deaths have continued to move lower). Yesterday, health authorities counted 56.9K new case, and 1,052 deaths.
COVID cases are spiking in 13 states over the past week. The rebound in new cases in states like Michigan (which is leading the country over the past week with a 53% spike in new cases) Nevada, Maryland and Connecticut are raising concerns about whether new variants discovered in New York State, along with other variants like the Kent Strain (B117) and other international strains.
Notably, Michigan is above the US average in terms of its vaccination rate according to Johns Hopkins Data. State officials are blaming variants for the surge, citing a similar dynamic seen recently in Florida and New York. Other states among the highest in vaccination rates—including West Virginia, Maine and Montana—are also dealing with case spikes. Of the 13 states with rising cases, only two - Mississippi and New Hampshire - have below-average vaccination rates.
New data from the CDC indicate that the California strain accounted for 13% of all new coronavirus cases that were genetically sequenced as part of a new federal program in late February. An additional 7% of the samples were the strain from the UK.

In other news, NY and NJ have continued to ease restrictions on restaurants and indoor dining as restrictions are expected to loosen further heading into next month.
Circling back to these new strains, scientists and health officials are on edge because both the UK and Cali strains spread more easily than their predecessors and seem to be more resilient to some of the medicines used to treat COVID-19. The California strain has also shown signs of resistance to the current crop of COVID-19 vaccines, which is just a reminder that a second generation of jabs is already being designed. Studies have found that the California strain, which is one of two new strains first sequenced in the US, is 20% more infectious than other strains.
It's just a reminder that while President Joe Biden keeps talking about families and friends gathering to celebrate July 4 without masks, there's reason enough to worry about another surge in new cases.

This thing has been over since last July. I have lived a normal life here in Georgia since April 24th last year. We were supposed to all be dead here in GA, but statistically we are about the same as the lockdown states.

Agree. I’ve been following Israel for the past month (at least) and it wasn’t until they got to about 50% vaccinated before they really had their final downturn in case numbers. In fact, they went up, big time, at the beginning (through 40% coverage), possibly because of both inertia and people thinking that it was ok to go back to normal.
So yep, another surge will be mitigated and then the virus will likely be just a really bad memory.

The double-masked talking heads on this disagree. They are now saying this could very well turn into yearly boosters because of mutations and various strains. They are throwing out the case that this may never end.
Remember these are the same folks who said that what was needed to knock it out (flatten the curve) was 15 days of wearing the mask.
Even easier to design something that isn’t a test and spike the number of cycles to test from 20-25 to 40 and find anything that is an artifact in the trillionth degree

I think there will be another wave if not two but it/they will be smaller. It will be interesting to see what happens as the weather warms up and people start going out more.
The more people who are inoculated, the fewer replications the virus has and the fewer opportunities the virus has to mutate. Polio hasn’t mutated its way back into our lives. Neither has smallpox. In fact, most of the major diseases from 50 years ago have been all but wiped out in the western world.
It’s possible we might need a booster for COVID-19 while the rest of the world gets their people vaccinated. But the chances of any major comeback for this disease are near-zero. We can now sequence new variants down to their last base pair in hours. And with the third generation vaccines, adjustments to new variants can happen in weeks; not months or years.
Polio and smallpox didn’t go down due to vaccinations.
Their curves were at near zero or on the steep downward decline before the vaccines for those diseases were intro’d.
The real source of it was safe, superior plumbing systems within countries’ infrastructures. Not vaccines.

The sanitary improvements of a secure clean water system is what reduced diseases of all kinds in people. Not vaccines. They came at the very end of the already greatly reduced infection curves.
For example, take Legionnaire’s disease, what do we always find when an outbreak occurs? Its in some water supply a group of people pick it up from, often a hotel’s water tank system.

Funny how you say the you stand with Trump. Just last week on Bannon’s War Room, one of the guests in attendance mentioned how disappointed people at CPAC were about Trump pumping vaccines.
Republicans, and conservatives in particular, are the least likely to get the cv19 vaccine, and even Fauci brought that up when he encouraged Trump to press us on the issue.
As to Trump, he just endorsed the swamp US Senate candidate for AR, after saying that he would endorse RINO challengers going forward. I don’t worship President Trump, despite agreeing with him on many things. He was right on therapeutics like HCQ which saved hundreds of thousands of lives. He’s wrong on the vaccine.
