European judges have ordered France to outlaw the hunting of songbirds using glue sticks, a practice described by campaigners as barbaric and a threat to endangered species.
French hunters argued the method was traditional and justified exemption from an EU ban introduced in 1979.
Until recently, the French government had successfully sought an opt-out that allowed glue hunting in five departments in south-east France on the grounds that it was “controlled, selective and in limited quantities”.
On Wednesday, the European court of justice ruled the practice was not selective and contravened EU rules. The ECJ called on France to ban glue-stick hunting of birds definitively. […]

Once the birds land on the sticks they are stuck; the more they struggle to escape, the more stuck they become. They are used as “callers” to attract other birds for shotgun hunters. …

Death and suffering are an intrinsic part of life.
Death inflicted by humans is a very small part of what goes on in nature, and is almost always far less cruel, involving far less suffering.
Those who live in a fantasy, made possible by the work of those who live in reality, are now calling for the end of reality for humans..
Life and death are intertwined. They cannot be separated.

True, but but humans should not be indiscriminate killers of other species, especially endangered ones. For example in most jurisdictions of the United States there are strict limits on the number of animals one can hunt and in some cases minimum cartridge sizes to ensure a humane kill.
Not much meat on a songbird, but to the French who enjoy snails, they might be worth the trouble.
Robins used to be eaten here in the US especially in the south, though they probably taste like mud since they mostly eat earthworms and berries. Plump passenger pigeon squabs, not songbirds, filled many commercial markets here until their extinction.

I use glue pads to catch mice because it works. But I don’t call it hunting. LOL

Salted Sparrow (What they did in the olden days to preserve them for winter treats)
To preserve them, you alternate layers of salt and sparrow (whole, but cleaned) in a preserving jar. When you want to eat them, you simply wash the salt off and fry them up in a little olive oil. This is best served with ouzo as a finger food.
Sparrow Pilaf in a Light Tomato Sauce
Boil the (cleaned) sparrows for about 20 minutes or until tender. In a separate saucepan sauté onions in oil. Add fresh tomatoes and just before it is ready, add fresh basil. Add the (drained) sparrows.
This is best served on rice that has been cooked in the sparrow water.

* 8 sparrows, cleaned or any game birds
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 cup lemon juice
* 1 tablespoon pomegranate thickened juice
* 1 tablespoon butter
* A dash of white pepper
* Fry sparrows in butter over medium heat till golden brown on all sides.
* Season and cook over low heat for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
* Add lemon juice and pomegranate juice and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
* Serve hot with fried mushrooms and potatoes.

You’ve just reminded me of a practice they have in France of eating baby birds - bones, feathers, heads, beaks and all , and they drape large napkins or cloths over their heads to either hide their shame or catch the explosion ... let me go look it up .................................................................................................................

OMG, how awful. How could you subject such beautiful and useful creatures who bring joy to the world with their beautiful songs to such a horrible and stressful death? Put all the barbarians who have killed birds this way on large sheets of the same glue, and leave them to the same fate. The poor birds are terrified, stressed, and hunger/thirst to death. No one should have to die like that-—unless it’s the human filth who do that to G-d’s creatures. I can’t even stand to use glue traps for rodents. Better an instant kill one.
Actually, chestnut trees provided food for passenger pigeons. When blight fungus wiped out the American chestnut passenger pigeons were collateral damage because their primary source of food was wiped out.
So how do you feel about birds killing and eating other birds?
