John McLean has quite the shark tale to tell.
In an interview with News 6, the Pensacola charter fishing captain shared details about the moment he helped reel in an estimated 12 to 13-foot female great white shark to shore. McClean said his fishing story began six years ago when he moved to Florida from Minnesota to pursue professional hockey.

So, how many memes can be strung together from this?
The Christmas gift that just keeps giving. And yes, Die Hard is a Christmas movie!
I hung out with some guys shark fishing from the shore on the NC coast one night. They caught a 7 foot black tip and pulled it out of the suds to measure it before releasing it in a manner similar to described in the article.
When they were working on getting the hook out the shark thrashed his tail and whacked one of the guys in the back and knocked him down.
I caught two lemon sharks 10-12 feet long in one day off of Tennessee reef near islamorada. The first hit a Bonita that I was reeling in just as it got to the boat. The second hit a chicken Mahi just after it jumped out of the water.
Both fights took 3 hours each. Between those fights, my dad refusing to help, getting a bunch of mahi, and one of those sharks stripping the gears on a reel, it was one of the most memorable days fishing in my life.
Also, it was on a 15 foot skiff. The sharks dragged my boat around the entire time like it was a big buoy.
It's hard to remember that there actually was a time when SNL was funny
They only caught one fish?
Many sharks are now endangered due to the demand for their fins for shark fin soup and for an aphrodisiac. Offshore they are longlined big time by the chinks, japs, and many others. Problem is they have become apex predators nearshore and need to be thinned down. They prey on almost every specie we hook here in the Keys and are a huge nuisance. Problem is the govt. manages them through advisory councils which are mostly worthless. Govt. should stay out of most everything they are in except keeping us safe ,borders, the currency and a few other things. they screw up everything.
Lots of stories down here like yours. That’s what I did for 30 years all over the keys. Write fishing reports for various newspapers and do fishing shows on the radio.
“So...
They only caught one fish?”
Well, yeah, but it was a big one!
Thanks for the ping. I got a second opinion from a shark biologist friend who identifies sharks and categorizes white sharks, here on the East Coast.
Here is his e-mail to me, below.
Hi Tom....That’s a white shark. There have been a couple caught in that area from shore. One in 2019 off Navarre Pier and another in 2015 by shark based shore fishermen.
Thanks, John
