It is the philosophical problem of punishing an amnesiac for things he can’t remember.
He should be his own best witness, but he cannot offer a proper defense. Maybe he was drugged against his will.
In some ways, an amnesiac is not the same person he was before the memory loss, which can be accompanied by a change in personality.
There are mystery stories where the amnesiac investigates a crime, not knowing if he is the perpetrator.
Drinking yourself into oblivion is not an excuse for bad behavior. When in public, an adult is supposed to be sober and able to take care of himself so that others don’t have to.
Are you really excusing stupid drunken behavior? This fool deserves everything he has coming to him.
The graveyards are full of dead folks who would likely disagree.
I had the misfortune to sit next to a drunk on a flight from LA to Maui years ago. He also peed himself, berated the flight attendant, and in general behaved like a jackass. The flight attendant was nice enough to get me out of there and into another seat, so I have no idea what they did with the souse. Hopefully they threw his drunken a** in jail.
Did they serve him the drinks?
They should put in pay toilets.
I ended up on a flight from Honolulu to Portland sitting next to a drunk. The more he drank the worse and louder he got - telling the flight attendants he was going to complain to the President of Hawaii Airlines (who had given him a free ticket) and say that they gave bad service, etc. It was awful but they took it in stride. The guy was a hairstylist. At least he was nice to me.
He said he knew Anthony Bourdain and wasn’t surprised when he committed suicide.
“Did they serve him the drinks?”
The first line of the article:
“ Grier reportedly admitted to agents that he had drunk several beers and multiple shots of alcohol before boarding the plane.”
Now that is a good question.
Dram shop laws may apply.
So that makes it okay? I don’t remember? Sounds like he’s watched Hillary too many times.
They didn't specifically say one way or the other.
§ 121.575 Alcoholic beverages.
...
(c) No certificate holder may allow any person to board any of its aircraft if that person appears to be intoxicated.
... yeah, they served him enough to put him over the top at least.
I have no qualms about life imprisonment for mean drunks. It would make the country a better place.
If he appeared to be drunk they should have refused to allow him to board.
So their claims before any court are they either didn’t know he was somewhat loaded and they served him more, enough to think he could be drunk later in their estimation, or they let him board while known he was drunk and were in the wrong to do so.
Perhaps he should take responsibility for his own actions and not pee on a place and assault people.
He may want to sign up for Alcoholics Anonymous while in prison.
He was asleep when he wet himself, was he not?
That kinda removes any sense of intent of his part where that is concerned.
As for punching, imagine you wake from a nap up to people yelling in your face? Even under good circumstances where you’re not drunk that’s gonna not go over well with the guy that gets woken up that way.
The crew could have easily done much better.
For example they could have gently woke him saying he was peeing himself and they wanted to keep him from further embarrassment.
A drunk who gets politely told he’s doing something really embarrassing by helpful people may respond differently from one that is getting yelled at being the thought.
Alcoholic blackout.
I thought the drunk said the attendants were yelling. He would have to testify to that at a trial if he wanted it as evidence. Who would believe his recount of the scene? Yeah, a quarter million is a lot.
