A slew of female aides to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo say they were either explicitly told or felt pressured to wear makeup and dress up to please the governor and get ahead professionally.
Twelve women told The New York Times that there was a general understanding that they should wear heels, dresses, and makeup when in Cuomo's presence. More than a dozen women who've worked for Cuomo told New York Magazine that the governor and his top female aides applied heavy pressure to dress well and in expensive clothing. Some said they were specifically directed to wear heels when in the governor's presence. Several current and former aides in the governor's office told The Times that women who are tall, thin, and blonde were favored in the hiring process.
Another former aide named Kaitlin, who asked that her last name not be used, told New York Magazine that the governor would criticize her physical appearance if she came to work with wet hair or otherwise didn't meet his standards. She said he would tell her, "You decided not to get ready today?" or, "You didn't put makeup on today?"
One former staffer, Ana Liss, said an executive assistant to the governor told her, "When the governor is here, you need to look really good."
A current senior aide and two former staffers told The Times they believed they were passed over for certain professional opportunities because of how they dressed. Three former staffers said they had to dress the way Cuomo wanted if they desired special attention from the governor. Staffers who dressed according to Cuomo's code would be seated at desks in view of his office in the Capitol building, The Times reported.

I despise Cuomo but come on...isn’t that just showing up for work?
What did they want to wear around the Governor’s office, fuzzy slippers and sweats? I imagine the men were expected to wear suits with ties.
This is silly piling on.

Did Andy ever fly on the Lolita Express?
DISTRACTION DISTRACTION DISTRACTION

‘Hey, little girl, comb your hair, fix your make up...’
sorry, but this is an offical Burt Bacharach free zone...
‘...at the time men wore pressed shirts, ties and suits...’
back in the mid fifties, when my father started his new job with RCA Corp, not only did the shirts have to be pressed, but also white...when this ridiculous dress code loosened to allow for light blue shirts, there were so many guys wearing them he said it was like working in a cop precinct...
‘I imagine the men were expected to wear suits with ties.’
Beaver Cleaver’s father was apparently expected to dress like that for the family dinner...
*** People don’t take women in sweats and daisy dukes seriously.***
It’s true. It works for both sexes, too. If a guy shows up in baggy pants down below his rear, he’s not likely to get positive attention from me. The saying, “Dress for the job you want, “ comes to mind.
However, I do think there’s a line. Requiring heels specifically would be sexist. Requiring dress shoes would not.
True. Back in the day I had gorgeous suits, dresses and shoes to match, and wore HOSE all the time. If the men were always in suits and ties, the women should be dressed up.
Now, if he were expecting cleavage, fish net stockings and stilletto heels, that would be bad.
And also ... WET hair? At the office? Who does that?
I guess this is why he killed Grandmas in nursing homes. They weren’t wearing makeup and high heels and were useless to him.
Your day apparently has changed if not passed.
It is not the receptionist/assistant/clerk pool that does the heels: not the boss.
It sounds like they will be doing a “Mad Men” remake with Cuomo’s office as the locale.
Lessee—what shall we name the new series—ah, I have it:
Godfather 4!
Andy failed to appreciate the natural beauty of Lakwanda and Latisha?
Racist for sure!
I still have that Dress for Success book.
Most of my career has been tied to a desk. The last five years of so has been on the road dealing with customers. I provide product support to customers, so jeans and work boots is my uniform.
I’ve always hated the office fashion show. It just seemed stupid to me. The women dress to impress each other and not for how to best perform their jobs.
The trannies too?
Time to send in more bimbos.
IBM required white shirts.
In college, we had to do a report on that guys other book Live for Success.
One chapter dealt with your wife. If she was not helpful to your career, get rid of her and get another one.
Needless to say, my book report wasn’t full of glowing repartee about how great the author was. With attitudes like that, he’s a loser
And June cleaver wore pearls.
