I was a teen driver starting in 1969 getting my DL on my 16th birthday. Muscle car heaven. I was an idiot and most of my buddies were idiots. One of my buddies didn't make it to adulthood, car accident.

In college, I sold my Barracuda and bought a VW Super Beetle. I've recognized for quite a time that that Beetle actually taught me how to be a smarter, safer and more capable driver.

They rent those exotics in Scottsdale and you see them often during the January- April months. I was sitting at a stoplight and a white Lambo came rolling up to the turn lane to the left of me. Two guys in it, prob 30-ish, probably in town for spring training. When the light changed, I heard the gears grind painfully and the guy popped the clutch as he moved out into the intersection and I saw the car literally hopscotch to the right. LOL...I think the old lady in the lane across from us probably wet herself. I sat there laughing, thinking, “That’s a really suave way to learn to drive a stick...macho grande!”

Years ago, I was selling a very hot 1967 chevelle. 454, screaming hot car.
A guy came over to look at it to purchase for his 16 year old son.
He found that the windshield defroster did not work, and said no, I won’t buy the car because the defroster did not work and that would present a safety hazard. True story.

Perhaps the father had taken out a life insurance policy on the young man.

A similar thing happened in Houston some time back. The father bought the 16-year-old son a hot car then paid for an outfit to add the nitrous-oxide system to the car. He was racing on Westheimer, which is a very popular road in Houston, crashed and killed himself. As I recall he didn’t kill anyone else.

I would be a total hypocrite to throw any judgement. I remember losing control of my dad’s car when I was sixteen. No other vehicles involved, but a ton of damage. I thought the world was over, but Dad was just happy I was ok.

I would hate to know the insurance rates for that kid, they would be enormous.

My son in HS drove a Jeep J-10 ‘77 pickup without seat belts; daughter drove a 1985 Jeep Wagoneer. Both steel construction. Both survived accidents with black ice and deer. Neither had accidents with other cars.

My first car in 1974 was a 67 firebird. 326 HO, with a 4 speed transmission. It was a nice car, and ran great. I never got a ticket, and did no street racing. I was a motocross racer back then. My folks made it clear. If the car brought tickets or any other trouble, the trips to the race track were over. I need a parent to sign me up and sign release at the track each Sunday. As for street bikes. Everyone should start on dirt bikes to learn the proper skills. I spent a few years racing super bikes. The best riders usually came from off-road background.

That's wrong. Those of us who have gone through those things already, and are wiser for having gone through them owe it to the younger crowd to judge and advise.

It would be wrong not to.
