Following the rise in popularity of the Detroit-style pizza pie, Pizza Hut released its own version of the square-shaped midwestern classic back in January. Promising a thick, caramelized crust and cheese that stretches all the way to the edges in all directions, it was supposed to be a slam dunk launch for the chain that no one can out-pizza. Unfortunately, based on a mostly negative response to the pie on social media and in some food publications, it sounds like Pizza Hut may have inadvertently created the most disliked pizza in the country (at the moment…) instead.
You'd think that a pizza created with laser-like precision (it includes exactly 32 pepperoni slices) and one that had gone through 500 iterations in the year it took to develop it would leave no room for error. Sure, "everyone's a critic" is certainly true with every fast-food novelty, and some negative comments are par for the course, but it looks like Pizza Hut may have gotten it genuinely wrong with the regional favorite.
According to Deadline Detroit, locals have taken offense at the chain's mass-produced pie for its weak resemblance to the cheesy, crusty, deep-dish legend that has put their city on the national pizza map.

Old Saybrook ‘Fish house” rocks
I think CT had the worst Mexican food I ever experienced.
I have no idea where a quality pizza can even be purchased anymore. Once upon a time almost all pizza was good. It is horrible now. It is nothing but flavorless bread. The other ingredients amount to nothing more than decoration.
I miss the old basic greasy pizzas......
Probably made with Koegels, I betcha.
If you test a slice of that at a lab I guarantee you’d be shocked at the results. The stuff ain’t food, Jack.
“ locals have taken offense at the chain’s mass-produced pie”
Get a life.
And this is a perfect example of modern “journalism”. An article about nothing important that quotes a few Tweets. All it’s missing is a random jab at Trump.
Plenty still abound, none as Chains.
Why are you here and not eating this culinary delicacy?
“I feel sorry for all the cursed people who only have crappy pizza because they don’t live in CT.”
We don’t have ‘only crappy pizza’ down here. Some are dang good!
You’d be crabby too if you lived in Detroit.
Funny part is I actually tried this. They underbaked it and the edges were not crispy. I’d give it a D. If the teenagers had prepared it correctly, it might have been a C. Maybe. Can’t really go higher than that considering the quality of their ingredients. I don’t generally eat chain pizza for a reason.
Call it what you want, but that style of pizza has been done nicely by the Folks at Buddy’s since 1946.
Think I’ll pick one up for dinner. 🍕 👍
Hubby was wanting pizza but I was too tired to make one from scratch. Made the mistake of trying a frozen DiGorno pizza on Saturday.
NEVER AGAIN! The cats liked it. They also like snakes, mice and bugs.
Amen, but I could get Vernors and Better Made chips.
Otherwise it’s a culinary wasteland..
We’ve got a local outfit that turns out a pretty good pie. Westside Pizza. They’re just a few miles away, so it’s still hot when I get it home. As long as I don’t hit a moose.
Bon apites
Mystic pizza?
Overrated
Excellent Whaling town though.
