The University of South Alabama has suspended three professors and ordered an independent investigation in response to an outcry over newly leaked photos from a 2014 on-campus Halloween party, showing the educators in racially insensitive costumes.
The pictures show then-Mitchell College of Business dean Bob Wood dressed as a Confederate general, and smiling professors Alex Sharland and Teresa Weldy posing with a whip and a noose.
On Thursday, University of South Alabama President Tony Waldrop announced that Wood, Sharland and Weldy have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation into the incident, which will be conducted by outside attorney Suntrease Williams-Maynard, a former trial lawyer for the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Mobile.

A backlash is coming. Who knows what form it will take...but I hope it includes a big dose of humor.
Hey, I think that guy on the right is my neighbor........[/sarc]
Quick, professors! Claim that the whip and the noose were meant for the Confederate general. Whip him, then hang him (not literally, of course).
This explanation would get you more then reinstated. It would get all three of you awards and promotions.
Just because academia is involved does not necessarily mean that the First Amendment is suspended.
Very soon that will seem like an absurd concept long past it's time. How sad.
I think the governor of Virginia had a lot better costumes than these.
I don’t think suspension is enough. They probably ought to go to the electric chair for this heinous crime against humanity.
You mean they didn’t shoot them?
What I’d worry about, from this 2014 Halloween party....there might be forty other professors who wore inappropriate gear (Gandhi suit, American Indian, etc).
You might have to lay off forty additional professors. Then this would flip the state to have every single college Halloween party monitored.
This took place in 2014 when confederate uniforms were not on the politically correct chopping block. Ex post facto snowflake political correctness violates the constitution. Not guilty
Why is it now politically incorrect to wear a sombrero to a costume party but not politically incorrect to wear a kilt or a beret?
Is there no equality in the world of cultural appropriation as defined by progressives in their snowflake constitution?
Cancel Halloween...
Of course New Orleans would be very upset if Halloween were canceled as they take Halloween very seriously.
In fact if you want to see a grand display of the ante-bellum South, go to New Orleans during the Halloween festivities as there are extravagant balls, very Antebellum & high fashion oriented. Not to mention the lower caste revelers in the seemly and tawdry Bowery.
I was down in NOLA doing some radio antenna work on the towers servicing the offshore oil industry and I witnessed first-hand New Orleans during Halloween and in my hotel there were some Grande Antebellum gowns and expertly coiffed hair and perfectly applied makeup. I asked one of the ladies where they were going and they were heading to the famous Anne Rice Halloween extravaganza! Each one of those women must have been wearing a couple of thousand dollars of gowna, jewelry, coiffed hair, make up.
The whole town rolls out and parties down on that “holy of holy” nites...
It is, to say the least, very bizarre indeed.
I defend their free speech rights; however, in 2014, that stunt was just stupid.
